Hi! We are two buddies visiting tokyo and kyoto for 11 days, starting this wednesday. we would like to either purchase a portable wifi device for rent or get two sim cards, but i'm not sure which option is better.
the main thing that I wanna know is - if it's possible to get either of them in Narita airport, so we could be connected from day 1?

Yes, you can be connected from day 1! You could rent them from the airport, but it's usually better to pre-order via the internet. There are many rental companies, and they deliver either to your hotel/hostel or the airport post office (check that it will still be open when you land).
You could share a portable wifi, which would bring down costs, but then you'd have to stay together. With SIM cards, if you separated for a while you could still contact each other.

Thanks for the info! why is it better to pre-order a SIM card? does it take significantly longer to just buy it as we land?

Pre-ordering either guarantees you a wifi/SIM. SIMs are easier to procure once in Japan than portable wifis, as you can also purchase them at several stores.
