Nice town in Nagano Prefecture for week

Hi,
Planning new trip to Japan, and as we wish to go in Kiso & surroundings, we try to find a nice town for 5 nights stay in Nagano pref.
Maybe any suggestion? We don't like big cities (Kanazawa was already too big...), better smaller towns with character (like Takayama, Kurashiki).
Is Matsumoto good choice?

Matsumoto is a pretty industrial kind of town, and it doesnt have the charm of (say) the old section of Takayama - or Kanazawa for that matter. It is a nice hub for trips to Kamikouchi (stayed there a few nights - awesome!) or Kiso valley and surrounds, and the french food there is great, but really a night or two is plenty.
Other nice towns in the general area that we've stayed at include Bessho Onsen (probably 2 nights maximum) or Karuizawa (that is a nice town with plenty to do for a few nights, but it is quite ritzy in parts).
