shinkansen from tokyo to kanazawa on 31 dec

Hi, I will be travelling to Japan on 31 dec. There will be 8 ppl altogether. We will arrive @ Haneda airport on 7 Am, and we will go direct to Shirakawa Go using Train and bus.
We will take shinkansen from tokyo to kanazawa and then follow by bus from kanazawa to shirakawa go.
My question is, i plan to use JR Pass for shinkansen, so i only can make reservation for seat after arrival. Will it be crowded on 31 Dec?
Are there any way to book online before i go to japan? If there is no seat in shinkansen, can we stand on the train?

Hakutaka train has non reserved seating.
If all seats are taken, you can surely stand.

You can make a reservation in advance from Tokyo to Joetsu-Myoko.

you don't buy the whole regular ticket and ignore your JR pass.

you get someone to reserve your seat only paying the reservation fee. from memory it is a couple of hundred yen.

i do it for when i want to travel on the steam locos on my visit to japan.

or you can use the services that have unreserved seats as others have said. line up early and get into the carriage first at Tokyo Station.

Using my JR pass, it only active when i redeem it in Japan. Can i ask someone in japan to make reservation without JR pass redeem?
