Kyushu 10D/9N Itinerary 2016/11/6 22:47
Hi, I like to seek comments on my self drive itinerary below. Many thanks.

Day 1-4 : Arrive in morning. Fukuoka (3.5 days)
Day 5-7: Drive to Yufuin as base, tour Yufuin & Korokawa (3 days), on day 7 drive to Takachiho to sleep
Day 8 : Takachiho Gorge (1 day)
Day 9 : Mt Aso, then drive back to Fukuoka
Day 10 : Morning flight home

Q1) Comments on the itinerary?
Q2) Am I spending too much time in Fukuoka? How much time shd I spend?
Q3) If I have an extra day, where old you recommend? (Can't go Kumamoto due to the impact of recent earthquake).

Many thanks.

Why can you go to Mt Aso but not to Kumamoto? They have shared similar fates recently. And at least Kumamoto isn't blocked to road traffic.

You know Mt Aso is currently block to road traffic currently right?

If you have extra time or a lokking to reduce your Fukuoka days, then Beppu, Miyazaki/Nichinan Coastline or Kagoshima/Sakurajima would be good add ons.

Too long in Fukuoka, IMO.

I'd spend a day there, at the most.

With the two and a half days you would save, I'd go to Nagasaki.

Many thanks Hakata14 and Wintern Visitor for your speedy replies.

Noted on Mt Aso, will avoid it :)
Will also cut down on days in Fukuoka.

Cheers!

"What to do in Fukuoka?" is a fairly commonly-asked question on this forum, so you could search for that and see the recommendations.

Perhaps you might really like them, and think it's worth spending 3 days there.

Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Saying Mt Aso is closed off is very misleading. All that is closed off is the area around the Mt Naka-dake peak.

Although that includes the ropeway, many of the best views are not FROM Mt Naka-dake, but OF Mt Naka-dake (and the other peaks), including the stunning vistas along the Milk Road that runs along the northern rim of the caldera.

Thanks Andy, your update is very much appreciated!

And thanks Winter Visitor - now that the itinerary is more or less in shape, I will check out what to do in Fukuoka (other than gourmet eating, which I like!) :)
