I used to get about 3.6 mil yen per annum before taxes and insurance, with transportation allowance and yet could save 1/4 of it with some side travelling aside.

So we don't know you, how your lifestyle is so how do we know what is enough or not for you? So what is your level of enough?

FYI English teacher starting pay ranges from 200K-250K monthly and some live quite comfortably while other live from paycheck to paycheck.

Your main concern or bulk of your money will go into accomodation. It can be cheap or expesive as you want depends on your lifestyle requirement.
Also single or with family will change the equation ..

I did a very rough calculation. Assuming you have to set aside Y100,000 a month for your rent and utilities, you'd still be left with around Y6,500-7,000 a day cash-in-hand to feed, clothe and amuse yourself. Given that you will have free transport and lunches on five days of the week, you'd have to live a relatively expensive lifestyle to find yourself in financial difficulty with that kind of salary...

That is a good salary in Japan. Many people live on 2M-2.5M a year.

Average salary in Tokyo is 6.2 million. Men's average is 6.9 million, women's 47.3 in 2015.
Assuming you don't have family it's pretty enough to survive.

Not sure where the 6.2M yen comes from. Plus, average versus mean is a different measure. (while 2014 numbers, wage growth is negligible)

厚生労働省発表の「賃金構造基本統計調査」です。
It comes from a statistical report by Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. You can see it's official report by Japanese government if you can read Japanese.
You should also know salary range is much different by area.

Note that "都道府県別賃金" data includes part time workers and the averages don't.

Ame - thanks for the link. I didn't see a figure approaching 6M in the data/reports.
