FujiQ - Express passes with ride tickets?

Hi I'm thinking of buying the express passes for the popular rides at FujiQ because I want to shorten my time there. Question: Is it a must for me to get the one day free pass before I can buy the express passes? Or can I still buy them if I only have the individual ride tickets?
(I'm hoping not to get the free pass because I think the Dodonpa is closed and I only want to ride the other 3 popular coasters.)
