Beginning of rainy season 2016/12/6 18:08
I would like to go in early May to Amami (not Golden Week), but according to my research there has been some possible conflicting information about when the rainy season starts. Japan Guide says May to June, while another site says that May is the sunniest month of the year. Does anyone know when the rainy starts? And if it is May, which week does it start?

This is "JMA" official records.

Changen by URL "year=2016" part to past year records.
Use Google translate.
"降水量" data part is so.

This year 2016 May was not so heavy rains(over 100mm) day
but Yakushima has deep forest and some higher mountains over 1800m(summit elevation)

so weather condition often changing quickly be careful even if weather forcast said "fine".
After rain road conditons will be no good like this.
