12 days Tokyo solo 2016/12/23 21:31
Hello :)

Need advice as it's my first ever trip to Japan in febuary. I'm travelling solo.
My flight arrives 10.30PM at Haneda International on 15th.
Hopefully flight arrives on time so I can pick up my pocket wifi and then catch a train. I read that trains stop operating after midnight.
I need to get a train to Togoshi station as my accomodation is in that area.
Will I have enough time to get a train from Haneda airport to Togoshi station before midnight? If not I may have to sleep in the airport until trains start running.
I plan to explore Tokyo for my entire stay and already have a few places and things to do in mind.
Maybe also take a day trip out of the city?
I also need advice on exchanging Australian Dollars to Japanese yen, I want to take cash and change it as I go? And where is best to buy Japanese yen?
One more thing, my flight departs at Haneda International on the 27th Feb @11.45PM and my hotel check out that morningis at 10AM.
I probably want to explore a little bit more before my flight as I have the whole day. But I don't want to carry my luggage all day. I read about locker storages I can find in subways for a fee.
If anyone has any info on that would be great.
Any advice or information would be great.
I look forward to my trip as it has always been a dream.

Thank you :)

Only in Tokyo? Kanto Area will be happy to have you as well!

First, check Japan Guide's Tokyo page here for your itinerary. Review as well earlier posts here in the forum so that you have any idea as from time to time, questions about Tokyo are fired out here. You will either read various Tokyo city travels and travels as far as Nikko, Kamakura, Hakone, Kawaguchiko and the like.

Check Hyperdia or Jorudan as well for your train travels.

I suggest to exchange your money at your home country then bring yen to Japan.

Check your travel from Haneda to Togoshi here http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi/en/search.html?dep_node=HANEDA%20AIRPORT%2....

On your last day, will your accommodation allow you to store your luggage as you tour around the city? Yes, coin lockers are there for a fee. But for any station or baggage center that you can store it for the meantime, that I cannot help you sorry.

I don't know if this will work for you, but I was able to use my bank's ATM card in the cash machines in 7-11 convenience stores - this took money out of my checking account and gave it to me in cash.

I did this several times so that I wasn't carrying an entire vacation's worth of cash on me, although I've heard this is a safe thing to do in Japan.

Since you are arriving so late, I would suggest that you pick a hotel that has a free shuttle to pick you up. Here is a example, the Toyoko Inn Haneda Airport II, but there are more.

http://www.japanican.com/en/hotel/detail/4014A01/?anl=haneda&navchecki...

As for money, I usually try to have enough yen exchanged before I leave for the transport, a meal, and my first hotel stay. I then use the Postal ATMs to pull money when I need it.

Good Luck, in planning your trip.

As stikiting said, it seems the last train you can catch is at 11:51. I would think you'd be able to make it, but I'm not a very experienced flyer.

If you do miss it though, Togoshi isn't all that far from Haneda, you might consider hiring a taxi.

For your last day most hotels will hold your bags for you. Some small places like capsule hotels won't, so you can check with the hotel to be sure ahead of time.

Currency exchange is 24h in the arrival lobby:
http://www.haneda-airport.jp/inter/en/premises/service/bank.html#excha...
They give very good rates, way better than my bank in the US so I never bother exchanging before I leave.
You can also try the ATM machines (provided you know what fees you'll be charged for an international withdawal). They did not like my debit cards at Haneda although the ones in Narita had accepted my debit card before. So this might be a trial and error thing.

Re: 12 days Tokyo solo 2016/12/25 23:20
Your best chances for ATMs that work with foreign cards are Japan Post Office ATMs and 7-11 ATMs.

According to Hyperdia (http://www.hyperdia.com) the last train from Haneda Airport departs at 00:23 and arrives at Keikyu-Kamata station at 00:31. It will be too late at that point to catch a train the rest of the way to Togoshi Station, but according to TaxiFareFinder (https://www.taxifarefinder.com/main.php?city=Tokyo-Japan&lang=en) it should cost about 3,241 for a taxi from Keikyu-Kamata to Togoshi station.

Or alternatively you could book a hotel for your first night in Tokyo that is close to Haneda airport. Then you would have options of train, shuttle bus, or taxi.

As for your last day in Tokyo, I'd suggest checking out of your hotel and going to Shinagawa Station. A large train station nearby that will have plenty of lockers for luggage storage. Take the Asakusa line from Togoshi Station one stop to Gotanda Station, then change to the JR Yamanote line and take it two stops to Shinagawa Station.

Taxi fare from the airport to Togoshi is around Y4200, so you can take a taxi if you miss the last train.

Your hotel will store your luggage for you on the last day. Alternatively, you can send your luggage to the airport the previous day via a service called takkyubin. Check with your hotel - you may have to send it by a certain time (e.g. before 5pm). It will cost around Y1500 per bag, give or take, and it will mean you don't have to worry about storing your bag somewhere, retrieving it, then carrying it to the airport.

Not the previous day, they want it 2-3 days ahead of your flight date so that they don't run into any issue.

I have used this service before with satisfaction. It costed me about 2100Y to send a suitcase from Hiroshima to Narita, and pick up took 1 minute.

I've sent a suitcase from Tokyo to Narita the day before my flight, but OP should definitely check the deadline.

From Tokyo to Kyoto 2016/12/26 06:30
Will be travelling to Japan for first time in feb for 2 weeks. Most of my time I will be exploring Tokyo. I am thinking of travelling to Kyoto for the day to get out of the city or maybe for a night?
Any suggestion on what I should do?
I would like to See arashiyama bamboo grove And Fushimi Inari taishi. Any other nice places or things to do let me know.
I know it is going to be cold and in Kyoto Hopefully have the chance to see some snow fall, I hear it doesn't snow in Tokyo.
How would I get to Kyoto and where to stay?

Re: 12 days Tokyo solo 2016/12/26 11:39
@Umami Dearest yes it can happen but at that point you are taking advantage of their goodwill. The day before for airport delivery is not the norm and not how they want it, as stated on their website. There are of course other delivery services but they are less ubiquitous and I can't speak for them.

@ Ni Lasia: Tokyo to Kyoto is a 2.5 hr train ride. You cannot just do a day trip. Kyoto is worth at least 3 days.

Re: 12 days Tokyo solo 2016/12/26 17:57
regarding the luggage forwarding service

my coworker forwarded their luggage the day before to the airport from a hotel within tokyo. they had an evening flight (not sure how late) but at hotel they forwarded in the afternoon day before. and it was there waiting for them. if they were further out of then it was advised to send it at least 2-3 days. but i think if it's within city limits of main airports at least a day advance is okay. well that's what they've been doing the past 4 trips to Japan in the past 2 yrs.

@Ni Lasia: If you want snow near Tokyo then head for Gala Yuzawa
https://gala.co.jp/winter/english/
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7690.html

JR Tokyo Wide Pass for 3 consecutive days at Y10,000 is good value.

Also, " ... particularly useful for travelers who plan to make multiple side trips from Tokyo to popular destinations outside the city such as Nikko, the Fuji Five Lakes, the Izu Peninsula, Karuizawa or the onsen towns of Gunma Prefecture http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_06.html "
