Food items to Japan 2017/1/3 10:38
Hi there
Some questions on bringing food items into Japan.

To prevent seasickness and other stuff I always carry a pack of minced dried ginger (used as spice for cooking) as well as a pack of whole white pepper, both small packs.

Should this be noted in the customs form when arriving in Japan? Could I expect any issues with bringing this?

Where are you from? It depends the area the plant is from.

Sweden.

It is in dried condition.

The white pepper looks like this:

Anyway. Should I state it in the customs information paper I hand in at arrival?

They need to be tested when you enter Japan.

If they are packaged and labelled, they should be no problem. If you have any concerns, email Japan Customs, and include the pictures as well as how long you intend to stay in Japan as well as the amount of each you wish to take.

It's pretty much safe while they are manufactured and well sealed(not "homemade" packets).

If you can leave them on the air plane, leave there. No need to declare anything.

You can buy a packet of whole white pepper in JP local supermarkets around 200-300 Yen(15-20g).

Dried Ginger is not very popular but still available as powder(200-300 Yen per bottle(15g)).

Well the pepper package is sealed and unopened, the ginger however is opended but in original package, maybe too suspicious?

Fun fact though is the same ginger was bought in Japan a few years ago but only been stored since.

I was hoping to save some time in not needing to buy these stuff at arrival though.
