Suica/other prepaid passes for JR lines? 2017/1/21 14:23
Hi, i am still pretty confused about the JR pass thing although i have read up quite a bit on it.

All i know is i can purchase the JR pass for 7 consecutive days for ard 29,110 yen. However i think it is too expensive and i would like cheaper alternatives.

Does Suica and other prepaid passes cover JR lines too? or it is only for other lines like metro etc. thanks!

Yes. Their coverage is explained here:

They do do provide a discount over regular tickets, though.

There is one/two/three day passes available if you are just roaming around a city. Not traveling long distance between cities. All the major railway companies have English wesbites and have good explanations of these passes.

Well, if you're going to use the Shinkansen a lot, it will be expensive no matter what. What you should ask yourself is whether buying the pass will come out cheaper (or less expensive if you prefer) than not buying it. And that depends on what train trips you plan to make.

Note that the JR Pass is for long-distance travel. You need to do a reasonable amount of long-distance travel to justify the cost; simply travelling around locally (e.g. just around Tokyo) won't make a JR Pass pay off.

An IC card can't be used for the shinkansen.

Yes i am travelling only around Tokyo itself to major tourists spots. So i guess having the Suica card is enough to go around with? i think my confusion was that only JR pass can be used for JR lines.

Already plan listed?
If so Use Google map and HyperDia for calc first.
In Tokyo(include around) not only "JR" lines.(over 30 different Rail companies)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_in_Greater_Tokyo

But Suica(also same functions one PASMO or) is no "discount" type.
Just convenient no need purchasing new ticket at vending machine each times
also no need bringing real big money mainly a lot of coins
(but Card charge/SF:Stored fare limit is 20000Y max)
and paying easy for shopping, eating and more as "e-money".

If you are only going around Tokyo, do not buy a JR Pass - it will be a huge waste of money! The IC cards will work for all train lines.
