I was wondering if there are typical Japanese brand in outdoor equipment that rival with well known international brands like Haglofs, North Face, Fjallraven and the likes.
Let's say for example I would like to by new high quality hiking shoes (like Lowa or Meindl), would there be a Japanese brand I should look out for?
Thanks :)

I did some searching out of curiosity and found this, there is a list of brand shops halfway down http://www.survivingnjapan.com/2010/08/how-to-find-outdoor-gear-in-jap.... You may find that things are similar to what I have found with cycling kit in that the brands are mainly the same as you see at home. In cycling every shop seems to stock Pearl Izumi. Not only that but of course finding something that would fit me is not easy as I am taller (and fatter) than most Japanese.

Hi and thanks for your input. I think I found this page a while back, but noticed it was from 2010 already, so I was thinking there must be more recent intel on outdoor shops and equipment. But what I do get from the article is that in Japan, I will mostly be looking at well known international brands. So perhaps there are no local high quality outdoor brands, but only the famous international ones....

Japan has some excellent domestic camping brands. Snow Peak, Montbell, Uniflame are some of the more commercial brands, but there are a lot of specialized makers out there as well. Are you looking for shoes/boots specifically and if so what type?

Hi. I followed up on the links and got the impression too, that there are some pretty nice things for sale in Japan when it comes to outdoor equipment.
I now have a pair of Lowa Renegades and an older pair of Meindl hiking shoes. I was thinking I could use a new pair. I was thinking of going for a more classic hiking shoe, like the Lowa Wendelstein...but then I thought that perhaps I would also be able to find a great (exotic) pair in Japan...a bit of a weird combination of liking unknown brands, having a nice reminder of a great trip to Japan, and also having a top quality product with perhaps even a story...:)
But...I think I just have to visit some of the bigger outdoor shops. I was planning to do some shopping when in Japan....I am staying in Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka (and also Kanazawa, Takayama, Nagano, Nikko and Hakone, but less time there to try and locate a good outdoor shop). You guys/gals got any recommendations on great outdoor stores?
