Hi. We are a couple planning our first holiday to Japan. We will arrive early morning on 16th april and leave in the late afternoon for 22nd. We are planning to cover Osaka, Kyoto and Nara. Is 7 days enough to cover this 3 places? what are the must see places? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Osaka/Kyoto/Nara in seven days - now, that's the most rational plan I have seen asked on this forum. What to see/do in those places depend on your interests. Use the destination guides on this site for recommendations: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2158.htmlhttp://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2165.htmlhttp://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2157.htmlOf course, seven days are not enough to see everything. So have fun deciding what's most interesting to you. Those three places are close together, so you can stay in one place and visit all three. Personally, I would pick Kyoto as the base, but Osaka is more convenient and has lots more to do at night. You can split Osaka & Kyoto, too, comfortably. There are transportation passes that covers the entire region, or buy local passes. Kyoto city bus one-day pass is good, as is Nara city one-day bus pass. Or, for a wider coverage, you can consider Kansai Thru Pass http://www.surutto.com/tickets/kansai_thru_english.html

Like my first-time to Japan and Kansai, the triumvirate is bar none. They are no doubt the best representative cities that set the tone of expectations about Japan as a whole. It was 6 days and 5 nights for me before and never was enough. Yours is 7 days and sure you'll ask for more. Just be open-minded and be ready embrace the warmth of each city.
Yes, you can stay at either city. Osaka was my base before, being more convenient to and from airport plus more accommodation options. Kyoto and Nara is 30 minutes and 55 minutes away from Osaka, respectively.
When in Osaka, if you find yourself using Osaka Amazing Pass, you cannot visit all of them so choose whatever pleases you. I suggest you to visit the Osaka Museum of History so you'll get the view of Osaka Castle Museum to be visited after. In my opinion, the two locations are complementary. The Hep5 Ferris Wheel will get you the overview of Umeda Station and Osaka. To view the night skyline of Osaka, visit to Umeda Sky Building is highly recommended.
In Kyoto, many are visiting first the world heritage sites. Since there is bus pass in Kyoto, bus is common way of travel there but the traffic in the city is erratic and unbearable at times as many are skipping the schedule not only because passengers are already overflowing inside the bus but because of traffic alone. The best option is to ride the train then either combine it with walking or riding bus to your place of interest. Many are also riding taxi but expect it will be expensive. If you happen to arrive there with an ongoing illumination event, it is highly recommended to visit any place at your heart's content.
In Nara, you may find out that you can walk to each locations once you arrive in Nara Park. Nara is covered by local bus pass. Comparing the traffic of Nara with Kyoto, Nara is a walk in the park.
