Kyushu rail pass alternative

Hi,
Staying in Kagoshima in Kyushu a few days including a visit to Yakushima, then heading on to Fukuoka, with a short daytrip to Miyazaki to visit a penpal in Miyazaki. Since the trip to Yakushima is 4 days having a Kyushu rail pass wont do much.
Are there any other options or would it be better off with just paying the shinkansen?

Note that the Shinkansen does not go to Miyazaki.
The main alternative you have to trains is highway buses.
