JR Pass worth it? 2017/3/4 23:08
we are a family of four adults (2adults+2teenagers) travelling to Japan from 8/04/17-21/04/17. our itinerary:
9-14 Tokyo( & surroundings)
15-16 Kyoto
17-18 Osaka
19 back to Tokyo
20 flight back home.
my question: is it worth to buy 7 or 14 days JRPass??? since we will be visiting Hakone/Fuji & moving around Tokyo.
Any advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.

No pass, single tickets are cheaper. If arriving via Narita get the N'Ex Y4000 round trip ticket (valid for 14 calendar days). For Hakone, you might be using the Odakyu railways line which is not covered by JR.

A 14 day pass would not pay off.

You would get much better savings than regular tickets with the japanican discount tickets, even including the regular fare travel between Kansai cities.

For Narita, you can use the 1000 yen bus.

If you still want to look at the JR Pass, a 7 day pass used Apr 14-20 with the round trip plus going to Narita once on the Narita Express would more than break even. For coming from Narita, you can use the 1000 yen bus.
You could get greater savings too by adding a side trip somewhere for Apr 14 - Nikko, Karuizawa, Izu, Kusatsu, etc. For Tokyo, 3-4 days are quite enough.

For the Fuji area, you suggest seeing both Hakone & the Lakes, so a Fuji Hakone Pass might work for you.

Within Tokyo, there is also a good 2 or 3 day subway pass.

I see this often in answers - adding an expensive extra to give the appearance of saving money is not saving money. (like the old joke about running behind a taxi rather than a bus because saving $20 is better than saving $2)

It is hardly just the appearance of saving money. If they go somewhere on the pass that they'd ordinarily fork over the cash for, it is indeed increasing their savings.

At any rate, the japanican tickets still offer significant savings over buying regular fare tickets.
