How long COE for working take? 2017/3/22 18:20
Hi all,
I'm Vietnamese and was employed by a Japanese tourism company in Osaka. I sent all my documents to my employer to apply for my COE in immigration office from end of Dec last year. Until now 1 week more will be 3 months since time of sending documents. But I still have not yet received any of its information. My employer said they are also waiting. The one I applied belonged to Specialist in Humanities / International Services type.

You know how long it usually takes? I'm so worrying now. I quitted my current job for this chance already. I gonna have no job and no hope for my future.

I think my case is also special. Since I don't have a university degree and my work in Japan gonna be as front office in hotel. Instead of the degree, I have 3 .6 years of working in trading company. In the registered form from my employer, my job gonna be about foreign business so I think it also links with my work experience also. I sent them the letter of approving my job from my current employer here together with my current job discription (in Japanese) . Besides I used to do 3 months of internship in Tokyo through AIESEC organization and also have certification of 6 months of internship in 5 stars hotel in my home country. I sent all related documents to replace for my uni degree. My employer said no need to translate into Japanese so I only sent the copied ones in English and Vietnamese.

Do you think there is any factors delaying my application with my above conditions?

COE's generally take 1-3 months, some people get them really fast, some people longer. I think your delay and potential problem is that without a degree you don't really have enough experience. Your employer was probably hoping you had enough special skills to be accepted, but sometimes it depends which inspector gets your application.

Thanks for your replying.
According to information, if I apply for Specialist in Humanities / International Services type and detail in application form is oversea business, I just need to have more than 3 years of experience. I am doing trading job, usually working with oversea partner for 3.6 years. Is it not enough experience for them?

The degree/experience requirements for E/SH/IS status (yeah, that's a bit of a mouthful...) differ depending on the kind of job you would do.

Btw even I saw some posts of some people here about their suitation. They were rejected even though they have bachelor degree. I mean like I really don't know how the inspectors base on to accept or reject ...

Only immigration knows, and they're not telling.

My experience is this; when everything with your application is right it goes fast. When everything is wrong with your application it goes fast. When something, mostly a little thing is wrong it goes slow. 3 months is the end of the waiting period, and neither you nor your employment sponsor have been told anything. You didn't give us a lot of information but my instinct based on what you provided is telling me some inspector isn't liking the experience. I'm sure you rational that the trading work and front office work are both "business" but from the point of tourism and hospitality management some inspector might be thinking you only have a 6 month internship. I'm imagining that what the inspector is thinking is that you're essentially a desk clerk for reception and why can't a Japanese person do that job since you really only have 6 months experience, and why do they want to import you?

Hi PsyGuy,
Thanks a lot for your contribution.
About my job, the real work I will do is front office but in the application and my labor contract, employer didn't mention about front office task. They just mentioned "general management" in labour contract and "oversea business" type in application form. And my employer also emphasized that I must write about working with foreigner firms in my current job proof. And I followed same with that.

Besides, if in case I have a university degree but the major is not linked with hotel work, they still reject it also? For example like engineering...

I think when an employer decides to employ someone foreigner, they know exactly how qualified enough the employees are to work for them. I mean employers know the candidates better than immigrations ...

So basically you are lying on your application, eh? Immigration are not idiots, they may very well have noticed that something does not look right.

Exactly I don't lie anything. My work will be in front office and also in the office as management. Besides they need someone can speak Vietnamese and other languages to work with Vietnamese and southeast Asian tourists. I think that is something a Japanese can't do...

I agree with Firas, without a degree and a lot more experience I don't see how you are qualified for management, and someone in immigration may have thought this doesn't look right. It's one thing (to immigration) to say we need this person to work at reception and front desk because she is bilingual (you don't say what your Japanese ability is), it's another to say this person is going to be a manager when there isn't much in your background that indicates you are really qualified for management. I imagine that your employer choose this route because you don't have much to support your proficiency in English or Japanese because if you had, your employer could have applied for the same visa as an interpreter or translator.

To be honest, you sound like a youngish, pretty girl with a little bit of language ability who can answer the phone and use a computer, and you can't get a visa status for that as a foreigner.

Hi Psyguy,
Thanks for your thoughts.
Yes I can speak both English and Japanese. But actually my job is not about translator so they can't apply as translation type.
Well I think the best thing is I must wait. since just only they inspectors knows what they want.
