Nishihama & Kondoi jellyfish sightings 2017/4/14 03:00
Hello,

Just a couple of questions regarding the following beaches:

- Nishihama Beach (Hateruma Island)
- Kondoi Beach (Taketomi Island)

1) Should we be concerned with habu jellyfish at either of these beaches? We will be travelling with two small children this coming July and wish to swim in these waters. Assuming these beaches are not netted, what precautions should we take, if any? Have there been any sightings and/or incidents in the past?

2) Is there a website we can go to in order to see the tide schedule for these two particular beaches? We want to know when the best time to swim is, based on the tide, but can't seem to find this information anywhere.

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

1) These beaches have not netted at least until 2015/04/17 and both beaches recorded some incidents in 2014. Note habu jellyfish is not the only one that should be concerned.

Wear a rush guard, stirrup leggings, marine shoes, aqua socks, and aqua gloves. At least, many wear a T-shirt to prevent sunburn as well. Bring a small bottle of vinegar, though that is only for habu jellyfish. Use Google Translate for the below.

☆持参する物☆
・食酢350mlー500ml(ビンは重いので空のペットボトルに詰めていくと便利)
・ピンセット(先が鋭利でないモノ)
・保険証
☆応急処置法☆
すぐに食酢をたっぷりかけ、こすらず、からみついた触手をピンセットで取り、病院へ連絡し指示を仰ぐ。動かないで安静に。

2) Tides:
Hateruma: http://anglr.me/tides/335?date=2017-07-16
Ishigaki(the nearest to Taketomi): http://anglr.me/tides/336?date=2017-07-16

It is said that Nishihama is better in low tides. At high tides, fast currents could wind up the sand and you could not look through the water clearly. But Hateruma blue should be the best at high tides.

Kondoi is a rather shallow beach. People says low tides should be avoided. You might have to walk up to half a mile to the sea. Visit there between low and high tides.
