Haneda and Narita airport difference? 2017/4/28 18:19
Need simple easy explain.

Is Haneda the old one and smaller in size ? Only domestic and closer countries to Japan ?

Is Narita the new one recently build and huge ? International airport ?

Which is closer to Tokyo Shinjuku station ?
From Haneda airport to shinjuku station and from Narita airport to shinjuku station, how long
would it take by subway ?

Haneda is the closer one. It takes about 50 minutes to Shinjuku. Narita takes about 90 minutes.

Haneda airport is older, yes, but ranked 5th in the world in passenger traffic at 79.5 million whereas Narita is newer but ranked 48th in the world in passenger traffic at 39 million passengers.

Both are international airports with many foreign destinations, though most international flights do arrive and depart from Narita.

Yes Haneda is the older airport and smaller in size, its concourse and terminal are basically the same, its very easy to navigate. However, Haneda has a number of international flights from N.America (Air Canada flys into Haneda). Haneda is also closer. It's 45 minutes on local trains whereas from Narita it's almost 2 hours on local trains.
Narita is the larger and newer airport, it's more difficult to navigate, but a lot of international flights go through Narita

See the both airport web access info also Google Maps.

HND is closer than NRT,
HND(int'l) is 24hr open but fewer int'l flights and flight routes are limited as countries.
(Check the flight schedules)
NRT is not 24hr open but int'l flights mainly.
Recent year cheaper flights dep/arr NRT T3(newest terminal).

Haneda has a longer history, but has brand new terminals and is as big as Narita.

Only domestic and closer countries to Japan ?

No, that's very old information.

Haneda.

It's easier to take direct Limousine Buses from either Haneda or Narita. But it's also possible to take commuter trains from the airports. In that case, you need to change trains, and it's about 600 yen/40 minutes in total from Haneda to Shinjuku.

It's not that difficult to travel from Narita to some parts of central Tokyo, but it costs a little bit more. For example, from Narita to Ueno, you can take a direct train which costs 1030 yen and it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

As for international flights, since the distance from Haneda is closer to central Tokyo, international flights from Haneda tend to cost more.

Thanks for the replies. I did see most flights are to Narita. Some airlines don't have Haneda.
Costs more to take a flight from Haneda hmm ?
I guess the airport size is somewhat similar. Not particularly one is bigger ?

How about you tell us what problem you are trying to solve, instead of asking abstract questions whose answers are on Wikipedia anyway?

Flight ticket will be expensive or not is depends on air company(=country),
travel date(season), oil market(fuel) and foreign exchange rate(money market).
If possible transit flights via another country hub airport,
you may getting cheaper reach to HND than NRT direct flight.

In Japan 7 larger hub int'l airports (sort fr North)
- CTS (in Hokkaido/Sapporo)
- NRT (Tokyo/not placed in Tokyo as location address)
- HND (in Tokyo)
- NGO (in Aichi/Nagoya)
- KIX (in Osaka)
- FUK (in Fukuoka)
- OKA (in Okinawa)

You can see the each airport size by Google map "satellite" pic.
NRT is the biggest in Japan.

Once upon a time, we were told that it was "impossible" to expand Haneda airport, thus the airport at Narita "had" to be built. We can see now that this was simply not true.

Indeed, Haneda can still be expanded to a certain degree, but Haneda alone would be utterly unable to handle all of Tokyo's air traffic alone.

I personally am still not sure whether I prefer Narita over Haneda, because train access to Haneda is uncomfortable on weekday mornings and evenings when travelers with luggage have to use packed rush hour trains due to the absence of trains that allow for seat reservations.

Also, for many intercontinental flights, arrival and departure times at Haneda Airport are inconveniently late or early.
