Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/5/22 01:25
Hi all,
It is my first time going to Japan - specifically Tokyo and Hokkaido.

For Hokkaido, we would like to pick strawberry if possible. Based on my research I think the strawberry picking season in Hokkaido is mid June to Beginning July. Also around this period, from what I read, cherries are end June to Beginning July. As my family of 4 cannot drive, is there any strawberry farms in Hokkaido that are accessible by public transport?

Re: Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/5/28 15:50
What parts of Hokkaido do you plan to visit? See the page 8 in the following complete guide for fruits picking. Niki near Otaru is one of the most promising areas. Check "Nearest Stations" at the right for each entry starting from page 9.
https://en.visit-hokkaido.jp/library/brochures/pdf/activities_in_hokka...

Here are some examples that I happened to find within 10 min walk from a bus stop.

#36 in the above catalog: Sobetsu Kudamono Mura
5 min walk from Soeji Mae bus stop, near Lake Toya, on the way from JR Date to JR Kutchan.

Re: Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/6/6 01:16
Thank you Luisjp

I am not sure why my reply to your post is not posted on the wall.

For end June 2018, we plan to visit Tokyo and Hokkaido.

For Hokkaido, I wish to visit Sapporo, visit a strawberry farm and stay in an onsen ryokans. Because we do not drive, so if we can maybe we visit Lake Toya.

For #34: Saeki Noen that is 6 min walk from Toya Mizu no Eki bus stop, is there a website? The website in the guide http://www3.ocn.ne.jp/~saeki/ is not working.

For #36 in the above catalog: Sobetsu Kudamono Mura, do you mean the Sobetsu Fruit Village? For the fee of 880 yen, I can visit all the farms or just 1 strawberry farm?

Lastly, is #34 or #36 near an small onsen ryokan?

Re: Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/6/6 13:07
It seems all the records after around 2017/6/1 22:13 were gone. I do not repeat what I have written.

All the farm should be treated as independent. For example, #35 is #36-12. There seem to be 89 fruit farms in this catalog.

Meanwhile, I have completed comparing all the 89 farms with busmap.info. Then, I have collected Google ratings by totals stars (= stars * votes) and got minutes on foot and meters from the nearest bus stop on Google Maps. Here is a list of all strawberry farms sorted by total stars.

Besides, I have made a list of top Onsens utilizing this ranking here: https://travel.yahoo.co.jp/special/dhotel/onsen_ranking_hokkaido/

121 Noboribetsu Onsen http://www.noboribetsu-spa.jp/?lang=en http://www.noboribetsu-spa.jp/

25 Akan Kohan Onsen http://akanko-spa.jp/ http://www.lake-akan.com/en/ http://www.lake-akan.com/
24 Biei Shirogane Onsen http://www.biei-shiroganeonsen.com/ http://www.biei-hokkaido.jp/en/ http://www.biei-hokkaido.jp/
19 Tokachigawa Onsen http://www.tokachigawa.net/english/ http://www.tokachigawa.net/
11 Utoro Onsen http://www.shiretoko.asia/world/index.html http://www.shiretoko.asia/index.html
10 Tokachi Makubetsu Onsen http://www.makubetsu.jp/kankobussankyokai/english/ http://www.makubetsu.jp/kankobussankyokai/
9 Furano Onsen http://www.furanotourism.com/en/ http://www.furanotourism.com/jp/
7 Sapporo Eki Onsen http://www.sapporo.travel/?lang=en http://www.sapporo.travel/
4 Asahidake Onsen http://wakasaresort.com/asahidakeropeway/
2 Asarigawa Onsen http://otaru.gr.jp.e.go.hp.transer.com/ https://otaru.gr.jp/

One of the best strategies would be to pick both the best farm and the best Onsen. If I used the total stars (= stars * votes) as the indicator for choosing best farms, those should be #25 Yamamoto Fruits Farm and Noboribetsu Onsen. If you were using a JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass,
http://www.jreasthokkaido.com/e/
and could toralate a 22 min walk, this could be an answer for you. However, this bus to #25 is not frequent enough. Taxi would be better.
For a small Japanese-style onsen ryokan in Noboribetsu Onsen, Kiyomizuya gets 4.3 stars and 35 votes.
http://www.kiyomizuya.co.jp/
https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=%E5%8C%97%E6%B5%B7%E9%81%93+%E5%B0%8...
If I do searches centered at Yamamoto Farm, Ginrinsou gets 4.6 stars with 19 votes. This is not in famous Onsen areas, but one of the most nearest one to Yamamoto.
http://www.ginrinsou.com/
https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=%E5%8C%97%E6%B5%B7%E9%81%93+%E5%B0%8...

The second best farm would be #4 Hakkenzan Orchard. If you would be OK for a 19 minute walk, this could be a good choice. The bus to #4 is quite frequent. You could do this from Sapporo, but it is nearer to the third best Jozankei Onsen. So, a set of #4 and Jozankei Onsen would be one of the best.
In Jozankei Onsen, Hotel Shiroito gets 3.9 stars and 8 votes.
http://www.jozankei.com/
https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=%E5%8C%97%E6%B5%B7%E9%81%93+%E5%B0%8...
Koganeyu gets 4.2 stars with 111 votes. This is not in Jozanken Onsen, but much nearer to Hakkenzan.
http://koganeyu.jp/
https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=%E5%8C%97%E6%B5%B7%E9%81%93+%E5%B0%8...

The third best farm would be #36-9 Takashina Kanko Orchard. This is only 2 minute away from the nearest bus stop. But from the fifth best Toyako Onsen, it would be better to walk for 19 minutes from Takinomachi bus stop. http://busmap.info/busstop/13188/
Sansui Hotel Kafu gets 3.4 stars and 43 votes.
http://www.sansui-hotel.com/
https://www.google.co.jp/search?q=%E5%8C%97%E6%B5%B7%E9%81%93+%E5%B0%8...

If you would not like to walk such long, #39 Tsuki Farm would be your choice. 9 minutes would be enough and the bus is rather frequent. In this case, a combination of the second best Yonokawa Onsen would be your choice.
Ryokan Ichinomatsu gets 4.0 stars with 26 votes.
http://www.ichinomatsu.co.jp/

Re: Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/6/12 02:57
Hi Luisjp

Thank you very much for your detailed suggestion. I studied them carefully and draw up the below plan. I would like to seek your comments and guidance please:

Day 1
Land at Narita Airport, take flight to Hakodate Airport

Stay in :

First choice - Ginkonyu @ 199 Kaminoyu, Futami-gun, Yakumo-cho 049-2566, Hokkaido https://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/Hotel_Review-g1120307-d1857413-Reviews-...
Question ----- I am not sure if there is public transport to reach the Ginkonyu? I also cannot find Ginkonyu website, or where to book this? I like to check the price first, and if public transport is very difficult.

Second choice in Hakodate - Ryokan Ichinomatsu, as you recommended
http://www.ichinomatsu.co.jp/
Question ----- I read that it takes 7 mins by taxi from the airport, but I am not sure if I read correctly?

Third choice in Hakodate - Hotel Banso
https://www.banso.co.jp/en/
Question ----- From their website, I think from Hakodate Airport, it takes 8 minutes bus and walk for 6 minutes, or a 7 mins taxi.

Day 2
Either stay 1 more night in Hakodate (but maybe change to another hotel, to save money), or check out and visit #39 Tsuki Farm. As to how to reach the #39 Tsuki Farm, it depends on which Onsen Ryokan I stay in Day 1.

After visiting the farm, take train from Hakodate to Sapporo
Question ----- Is the sequence correct, to check in the Onsen Ryokan on Day 1 and #39 Tsuki Farm on Day 2? I am worried that there is not enough time to enjoy the Onsen Ryokan on Day 1 because I am arriving from Narita Airport then Hakodate Airport.

Day 3 Visit Sapporo

Day 4 Day trip to Otaru

Day 5 Flight to Tokyo

Day 6 - 9 Tokyo (undecided where to stay, or what to do yet)

Day 10 Flight back home

Thank you very much!

Re: Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/6/12 03:01
Sorry, I added some more questions too

Second choice in Hakodate - Ryokan Ichinomatsu, as you recommended
http://www.ichinomatsu.co.jp/
Question ----- I read that it takes 7 mins by taxi from the airport, but I am not sure if I read correctly?

Additional Question ---------- when I searched for Ryokan Ichinomatsu on the booking website e.g. Agoda, I cannot find a room that I seen on their website, where one of the wall is a glass panel instead of wall. Is there an email to contact Ryokan Ichinomatsu?

Additional Question ---------- Also, if I want to visit #4 Hakkenzan Orchard from Sapporo, did you mean to take bus #4 but I have to walk 19 minutes?

Thank you again!

Re: Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/6/13 21:37
Ginkonyu----------------------------
http://www.ginkonyu.com/
No public transportations to this hotel, but they say the hotel will pick you up from the station.
http://www.ginkonyu.com/access/
10k-20k yen per person depending on the type of a stay.
h”‘—¿‹à(‚¨‚Pl—l) 10,650‰~`20,100‰~
http://www.ryokan.or.jp/inn/04760

Ichinomatsu------------------------
Yes, 7 minutes by taxi. Or, take a shuttle bus to Yonokawa Onsen bus stop. It would take 3 minutes on foot to Ichinomatsu from the bus stop.

http://www.ichinomatsu.co.jp/publics/index/4/
They just have telephone and fax, not email.
http://www.ichinomatsu.co.jp/publics/index/59/
If you have any question at, say, Agoda, ask Agoda. You could choose any ryokan in Yonokawa.

Banso------------------------------
Banso is very near to Ichinomatsu (four minutes on foot). Yes, it would take 6 minutes on foot from the above Yonokawa Onsen bus stop. It would take 8 minutes from Airport to the bus stop by bus, or 7 min by taxi.
https://www.banso.co.jp/access/

It would take 7 minutes on foot from Ichinomatsu to the tram station,
“’‚Ììs‚«Žs“d‚Å30•ªi“’‚Ì쉷ò“d’≺ŽÔ “k•à7•ªj
while 5 minutes from Banso. Banso is nearer to the tram station, the center of Yonokawa Onsen, than Ichinomatsu.

Ginkonoyu looks nice, but it is a bit far away from Hakodate. It would take 91 min from JR Otoshibe to JR Hakodate.

Strawberry picking is better in the morning. If you want to stay in central Hakodate, you could go straight to Hakodate at the first night. After the strawberry picking in the next morning, you could get back to Yunokawa Onsen to enjoy an onsen ryokan. Yunokawa-Hakodate is about 20 minutes. You may decide
a ryokan after seeing it by that.

Tsuiki Farm------------------------------------------------------

Tsuiki Farm says they will start strawberry picking from 17 June, this year.

Re: Hokkaido Strawberry farm by bus 2017/6/19 01:37
Hi Luisjp

Thank you for your help, I read through carefully your advice.

Currently I have decided on Tsuki Farm. At the moment, there is some uncertainty of my holiday in 2018 but it will be either strawberry picking in June or Cherry picking in August.

As for accommodation my first choice is Ryokan Ichinomatsu.

In terms of logistics, I still am not sure how to organise the days.

After landing in Narita Airport, flying to Hakodate Airport, should I check into the Ryokan Ichinomatsu for the first night.

I understand that fruit picking is better in the morning. But if I visit the Tsuki Farm in the morning on the following day, it means I will be unable to enjoy the onsen fully until checking out at noon.

But staying 2 nights on the Ryokan Ichinomatsu is beyond my budget for my family of 4 people.

Hence is something like this workable:

Day 1 Land in Narita Airport, fly to Hakodate Airport. Stay in Ryokan Ichinomatsu

Day 2 Check out of Ryokan Ichinomatsu at noon. Sight see around. Stay in nearby hotel or airbnb.
Question: Is there any nearby landmark that can help me find a nearby hotel or airbnb? From the map I check, the nearby landmark is Yunohama Park?

Day 3 Check out of hotel/ airbnb and visit Tsuki Farm in the morning. Then travel to Otaru/ Sapporo.

Day 4 and 5 [Yet to plan] Otaru/ Sapporo

Day 6 From Sapporo, fly to Tokyo

Day 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 [Yet to plan] Tokyo

Day 11 Depart from Tokyo

Thank you very much!

Regarding Day 2 hotel or airbnb, I can also stay nearer to the Tsuki Farm or the train station where I will travel to Otaru/ Sapporo on Day 3?

Thank you very much!

Hakodate could be divided into three areas; Mt Hakodate, Goryokaku Fort, and Yunokawa Onsen. You could find any accommodations near these areas. Most people would like to see the night views from Mt Hakodate and visit the morning market near JR Hakodate.

So, after you enjoy Yunokawa Onsen until noon, walk around Gorykaku and the Bay area/Motomachi, at the foot of Mt Hakodate. At night, go up to the summit by a cablecar, then in the next morning, the morning market and Tsuki Farm. Or, do the morning market just after Yunokawa for a lunch. The morning market is open until 14:00.

If you do the morning market in the early morning (they open from 5:00), a hotel without breakfast might work fine. Such as this near JR Hakodate.

If it is a sunny day, Onuma Park would be a good site to stop before Sapporo. Lake Onuma is just in front of the JR Onuma Koen station. If you could catch the 15:25 train, you could reach Sapporo by 19:00.

It would cost 300 yen per suitcase at the Tourist Information Center at Onuma.

As I posted the above, you could drop at Sobetsu instead. Some farms are only one minute away from the bus stop. In this case, the luggage should not be a big problem. Although the buses are not so frequent there.
