Favorite places to visit in Kyushu 2017/6/6 10:45
Hello!

I'm looking for suggestions on places to visit in Kyushu that are hidden gems. I'm interested in knowing where your favorite place to visit is and why you enjoy it! I am especially interested in quaint country side villages, beautiful outdoor locations, or any place you feel is under-rated. If you love an attraction/place/restaurant in a larger city feel free to share that too. Thanks for your help!

Hi. None of these are hidden gems as such but my favorite places in Kyushu were :

1. owl place at Yufuin (awesome);
2. Nagasaki Bio Park (not really Nagasaki, easiest to access via Haus Ten Bosch);
3. Hozentai ryokan at Kurokawa onsen (best ryokan I've ever stayed at, and I've stayed at plenty);
4. Pizza shop near railway station at Karatsu (best pizza ever from a country that makes great pizza).

Not particularly hidden gems and in no order. from my recent visit:
Yoshinogari archaeological Park
Uminakanomichi Ocean Park
Kagoshima - all of it.
Chiran peace museum for Kamikaze pilots
Kyushu national museum. Its at Dazaifu

I was on my bicycle so
the ride from Kagoshima to Nishi-Oyama station
Japan national route 207 from Togitsu to Funazu
The coastal ride from Isahaya to Sasebo

Cape Toi in Miyazaki is famous for wild horses and was hands down my favorite place in Kyushu, although the whole trip was really amazing. The entire drive from Miyazaki City down to Cape Toi was just gorgeous, and full of really fun and interesting places. We definitely didn't allot enough time, and had to begrudgingly skip places as we'd already made hotel reservations.

I liked the Ibusuki Sand Baths and staying at the Sakura Onsen in Kirishima for the mud baths. Not hidden gems, but definitely highlights. Also, Takachiho was beautiful and definitely worth staying over night. We found a fantastic local sushi restaurant and had a great dinner right before the shrine show.

We only saw Kagoshima, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki but it would be hard to go wrong anywhere in that area!

There're not many tourists at places where driving is necessary. Visitors are mainly from Kyushu and Yamaguchi.

You need a car to get here, but I enjoy going into Gokanosho and the Itsuki areas of Kumamoto. Except in the fall, the place is empty for waterfalls, clear streams, and isolated villages with an occasional thatch-roofed house. I wrote a review and stuck some pictures up on Tripadvisor at:

I also enjoy hiking around Ebino-Kogen in Kirishima National Park, and the drive along the Nichinan-Kaigan south of Miyazaki City. Otherwise, I spend a lot of time singing songs in snacks in Honmachi in Yatsushiro.
