1 week hiking trip first week of October? 2017/6/14 21:31
We want to do a week hiking trip in Japan the first week of October. I'm wondering where's the best location to do day hikes each day, so we can be back at a hotel each night?I was thinking of Daisetsuzan National Park or Kamikochi?

The latter half of Sept to early Oct is autumn foliage season in the Daisetsuzan National Park. Sounkyo is beautiful during early Oct and koyo can already be enjoyed on the way there from Kamikawa on Rte 39. The only concern is the weather while hiking on mt top. Instead of autumn colour we saw traces of snow on the ground on top of Kurodake ropeway station.
Another popular hiking site in Daisetsuzan National Park is Asahidake and one can actually hike between Asahidake and Kurodake. But to do this long hike and return to Sounkyo on the same day would be very rushed. Although Asahidake and Sounkyo look close to each other on the map, travelling between them involves a big loop with bus transfer via Asahikawa.
