Is Kabuki popular to watch Japan? 2017/7/5 01:45
I want to know how widely available it is to see live Kabuki theatre or where is the best place to view it. Thank you!

It's not that popular. There are not that many kabuki theaters, so it helps to be near one of them if you wish to attend a performance.

Tokyo is probably the best place. There is the Kabuki-za Theatre.

In Kyoto, there is the Minami-za Theatre. But that one is currently undergoing some repairs.

In Osaka, there is the Shochiku-za Theatre.

In Hakata, there is the Hakata-za Theatre.

There are other smaller places, but above are the major ones.

Asking if kabuki is popular is like asking if Broadway is popular. Just as you need to go to New York to be in Broadway, you need to go to the Kabuki Theater in Ginza, Tokyo, to see the real thing.

Since kabuki is extremely popular among its hardcore fans, tickets for popular shows are easily sold out, and often require connections to obtain them. But there is always a nice show or two that anyone can buy tickets for.

Kabuki companies do tours, and there are also regional versions of kabuki, but they follow slightly different styles which are great in their own ways.

It is best to watch is Kabukiza in Tokyo, the second is Osaka.

"Professional" Kabuki who is only top actors so ticket is not cheap,
just anyone can watch it, but it can not be said popular.
I do not think Broadway's example is good.
If compare it in overseas performances it's like watching a "top Opera".

If you have a good luck there is also the possibility of watching "Shiroto(=Amateur) Kabuki".

I went to see a show at Kabuki za and found IT hard to sit through as the pace is slow and even with translation hard to follow.

I've been to Gion corner at Kyoto before and liked that better due to variation in the different arts. Maybe not for the purists as it is touristy.
