Anchor Cheddar Cheese, from New Zealand?

Are there shops in the center of Tokyo which sell imported cheese in bigger amounts? I bought 2 kg blocks of Anchor Cheddar from makro in Thailand but haven't found anything comparable here so far. I live in Sugamo, Costco is more than an hour away and would add 1,400 Y to the purchase. I'm not talking about expensive gourmet stores that sell rare cheeses in tiny portions, I'm interested in decent Cheddar or Gouda, 2 to 4 kg. Any shop close to the JR Yamanote Line would be of interest. If anybody could post amount and price that would be perfect - I really miss a good cheese sandwich!

Thanks for that, Luis! Just in time, I just got back from shopping and bought several 100 g bags of shredded cheese to see if they're any good - they're better than NO cheese! I'll work my way through the links, the first one looks good, the 4,5kg Gouda looks like the same they sell at makro in Thailand.

Do you have any Kaldi store close by? They have some cheese. Not in the kg amounts you are thinking, but definitely a better alternative than shredded cheese. Also remember that you (or friends) can bring cheese to Japan and cheese is quite easily frozen.

I miss good NZ cheese, but I only see the smaller blocks (more like packets). Haven't seen any Fonterra brands like Anchor. Unfortunately to protect the local product Japan has regulations to keep out good cheese and to keep prices high.

Finally went to check out some stores today. First the Atre Vie in Sugamo, then the "Depa Chika" under the ground in Ikebukuro. It was fascinating, lots of real tasty food on display, meats, salads, cakes, wines, whisky and much more. There are several connected markets and I floated around from one end to the other. One place had bags of all kinds of flour; baking decent bread is next on my list! The stuff you can buy in normal markets you can't call bread, it doesn't even smell of yeast. But - 1 kg for 350 Yen was the cheapest, whole wheat or rye was twice as much! Quality food costs you an arm and leg. Then off to Tobo but it was the same as at the first two stores: a good variety, lots to choose from, but tiny portions for several hundred yen per 100g. Kaldi was my last hope. Their cheese selection was ridiculously small but therefor the place smelled good and the small paper cup of ice coffee was superb. I made a few phone calls, pulled a few markers from sources I can't reveal and got a hot lead on a store in Ueno I will follow up on tomorrow. Apparently they have 4,5 kg Gouda wheels and sell smaller pieces of it, just what I am looking for. The noose is tightening...

I'm glad to report that I have been successful in acquiring a 1.1 kg piece of imported Dutch Gouda for only 2,350 Yen! For a while there I felt a bit like this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F7mfu2wSEEI've tried it, it's good quality and I'm happy with the relatively low price of a just over 200 Y per 100g. If I would've bought the whole 4.5 kg wheel it would have been even cheaper, around 190 Y / 100g, but I'm afraid it wouldn't have fit in my tiny fridge. The only other cheese available was imported Edam cheese which was surprisingly a bit more expensive. I forgot how much the 1.7 kg ball was since I'm not that interested in Edam cheese. The exact shop is difficult to find, all I can say is that it is in the Ameyokocho market, underneath the train tracks, three minutes walk from Ueno station.

Hi, If you are looking for cheese specifically from NZ, I recommend you to look for Yamaya shops in Tokyo, there is one in Ikebukuro, about 5 minutes near the Biccamera. It is a food chain that sells wine and alcohol from abroad, they also have cheese and stuff like biscuits, chips, chocolate from abroad. Mostly imported food. I saw those cheeses form NZ: - Gouda: 700g for 1420 yens (tax inc.) - Egmont: 700g for 1420 yens (tax inc.) - Red Cheddar: 700g for 1420 yens (tax inc.) https://www.yamaya.jp/PS: NZ/AUS gouda are fake gouda! ;-)
