Hakone hiking trails (near Owakudani) open?

Hi there, Simple question. The japan guide page for hakone currently says "Due to volcanic gases, the walking and hiking trails around Owakudani are currently closed to tourists. "
However, this was last updated in 2016.
Is there a website where we can check the current status?
I really want to do the hike, not just the ropeway/transit experience. We want to hike from Owakudani to Mount Komagatake, then down to Lake Ashinoko. But I dont know if the hiking is permitted, or are the trails ever open?
I appreciate any help!

Search "town.hakone.kanagawa.jp" and you can find Hakone town official web site. Choose English at the top of homepage, move to "Commonly viewed pages, 1 Traffic regulation information". You can confirm the current status.
