When and how will you come to Matsumoto?
Will you stop by Shirakawa-go on the way to Takayama?

Oct 12: Visit Tofuku-ji, Fushimi Inari & Nara. Oct 13: visit Arashiyama & Gion
Oct 14: Depart Kyoto Station via Nagoya to Matsumoto. 2 nights @ Hotel Montagne Matsumoto
Oct 15: Matsumoto station to Hotaka Station, to visit Daio Wasabi Farm; afternnoon return to Kita-Matsumoto Station, sightseeing of Matsumoto Castle, Nawate & Nakamachi Street

Yes, on Oct 21 we are planning to hire a car from Kanazawa to visit Shirakawa-go, on our way to Takayama. Is this a good option?

So you are in the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route from 16th Oct to 18th Oct. Then I would consider Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Kippu which allows you to travel back and forth for free.

https://www.westjr.co.jp/press/article/2017/03/page_10090.html

It costs 25750 yen from Kyoto and includes Kyoto to Matsumoto to Shinano-Omachi (one way, can't backtrack), free pass from Shinano-Omachi to DentetsuToyama (the Alpine route), then JR Toyama to Kanazawa by Shinkansen, and Kanazawa to Kyoto by Limited Express (one way, can't backtrack). With your itinerary, you must give up Kanazawa-Kyoto section, but still it will pay off if you backtrack within the Alpine route. For example, you can go to Daikanbo and then back to your hotel in Omachi Onsen on 16th, and on 18 th you can go to Murodo and back to Tateyama and then go to Kanazawa.

By the way, there is no Shinkansen from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto. You may better consider Haruka & Icoka package.

Hi frog1954,
Just a few clarifications :
1. we are not going back & forth on the Alpine route but just travelling one way from Matsumoto to Tateyama Kokusai Hotel in Toyama.
2. In view of (1.), would it work out cheaper for us to buy the Alpine Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist pass (Y17500 for 5 consecutive days)? http://touristpass.jp/en/alpine/
& https://www.jnto.org.au/alpine-takayama-matsumoto-area-tourist-pass/
3. I can't find the website for Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Kuppu? What is the time frame for using this pass?
4. Is it a good option to rent a self drive car to travel from Kanazawa to Takayama, via Shirakawago?
Appreciate any comments on the above.
Thank you once again.

Well, it is somewhat complicated calculation so I will write just the conclusion.

If you don't backtrack within the Alpine route, the cheapest way is to buy a single ticket from Kyoto to Shinano-omachi valid for 3 days, 10810 yen,

http://www.hyperdia.com/en/cgi/en/search.html?dep_node=KYOTO&arv_node=...

Tateyama Kurobe Option ticket 9000 yen,

http://jrtateyama.com/e/

a round trip ticket from Matsumoto to Hotaka 640 yen,

and a single ticket from Toyama to Kanazawa 2810 yen (Shinkansen, non-reserved seat).

3. I can't find the website for Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Kuppu? What is the time frame for using this pass?

https://www.westjr.co.jp/press/article/2017/03/page_10090.html

Until the end of November.

4. Is it a good option to rent a self drive car to travel from Kanazawa to Takayama, via Shirakawago?
Appreciate any comments on the above.

Well, it depends on the person. I would take bus, since there are sufficient buses between these places and if you take the bus, you don't need to think of car accident (at least you will not be arrested), road signs mainly written in Japanese and car parking.
