I have a criminal record of drug possession. we're going to visit my wife's family in Japan and I was wondering if I can pass immigration without problem. Thank you.

us passports are all machine readable and contain loads of information including not in the least, all of the info given when applying for the passport. immigration scans the passport. also japan now fingerprints visitors as well. short answer, you can not go, if you try, you will most likely be identified and balcklisted.

Depends, did you serve your time?

Another item is that, Japan just passed the law on fingerprinting, but it has not yet been implemented and shouldn't be for a while, because the systems are not in place yet, they passed the law, you still need time to get the computer systems and equipmentin place. I read it should be done by November 2007.

as per the japan immigration control act. ' any person who has been convicted of a violation of any law or regulation of Japan or of any other country relating to the control of narcotics, marijuana, opium, stimulants or psychotropic substances and sentenced to a penalty' will not be allowed in to Japan. as mentioned previously, all US passports are machine readable - any information on your passport is available to immigration officers.

consult anyway 2006/5/19 08:31
Quite a few rock musicians with criminal record of drug possession have entered Japan, however with years of very complicate procedure. Why not consult at the Japanese Embassy near you anyway.

i agree with uco. if you are a rock star, go ahead. on the other hand , if you just look like one, the chances are even higher you will be denied entry. the above response states it quite clearly directly from the proper athority - Japanese immigration. but, what is the worst that could happen, i do not think they will detain you too long. though the blacklist thing is a bit intimidating, as is the passport and fingerprinting. the consulate or embassy is the best way to get a definitive answer.

They don't ask you anything about your criminal record when you apply the passport in the US. But somehow they will know at the immigration in Japan. I was told to get Visa by Japanese Embassy. I was told by the degree of crime, you can egt visa. My Japanese wife said so.

look, the bottom line is that regardless of what questions are asked from any party. one can always not answer, lie, or answer truthfully. answering on any document other than truthfully one runs the risk of getting caught in that lie. in the case of a criminal record, the risks are pretty high.

I made it. 2006/7/5 21:42
Well, despite of all the worries my wife and I've had, we were able to spend wonderful time in Japan. It was a life changing experiences for me and my wife's family was amazing. I wish we had more time there. Kids loved there and I really wanna go back again soon.
They didn't ask me anything at immigration and I was surprised to be cleared in such a short time. My wife was waiting for us and she was also surprised to see us coming out so soon because there were a lot of people waiting at the line. Anyway, I'm very glad to be able to spend time in Japan. It was a wonderful vacation.

Good on ya..

Japan is sometimes a bit over the board with its protection mechanisms. As long as you could enter and enjoy yourself :)

Hi Red,
Did you state the criminal record in the entry form of Japan? If not, did Japan allow you to enter?
