Japan Typhoon forecast 2006/8/26
I am planning a trip to Tokyo in mid-Sept, but are worry about the typhoon.

a) Any good website that will forecast Japan Typhoon?
b) Is it possible to forecast a typhoon 10 days in advanced?

Thanks!

a) Any good website that will forecast Japan Typhoon?

In English:
http://www.jma.go.jp/en/typh/

b) Is it possible to forecast a typhoon 10 days in advanced?

No. A useful approximation of the course of a typhoon can be made from about three to four days in advance. They become more and more accurate, as the storm approaches. Predictions more than four days in advance will come with a high factor of uncertainity, although the very rough direction might be predictable.

Not really a worry 2006/8/26
In any case, in most years no typhoons make direct hits on Tokyo. Even if one does, it is usually considerably weakened by the time it gets there- nowhere near the strength of Hurricane Katrina for example. If a typhoon lands further south in Japan, Tokyo may get some heavy rain, and possibly some wind, but this can happen when there isn't a typhoon as well- just an ordinary storm.

Concerns about typhoons aren't really a reason to cancel a trip to Tokyo. Okinawa- perhaps, yes, but not Tokyo.

June/July is not a season for typhoon, at least under normal condition.
Typhoon hit Japan island mostly towards the end of August and September.

In Tokyo June is a rainy season, though. It may rain quite a lot, and definitely the humidity is extreme.
It is getting hot in July on top of the humidity, it can be uncomfortable weather during these two months.

Unless you go on a working holiday visa, I think that rather than typhoons your main problem will be getting a visa that allows you to work in Japan.

As for typhoons, see the following page:

Typhoons in Japan 2007/8/3
We live on Okinawa since March and just went through our first Typhoon in July. The best forecast for the entire area is on the Kadena Air Force Weather site:
http://www.kadenaservices.com/weather.html
They provide forecasts and satellite images where you can track a storm days in advance. Ours in July was so slow, we tracked it for 7 days before it hit Okinawa.

Elmo,

It will be heading north over eastern Japan on Friday, so there is no cause concern whatsoever if you are not arriving until next week.

Is it possible to predict will there be any typhoon nxt week?

Did you not see the link posted earlier in this thread?

Nothing else on the horizon at the moment, but at this time of year, it would be wise to check the site again before you arrive.

Not that big of a deal? 2007/9/7
I too have been trying to track the current typhoon as I will be visiting next week so I have been keeping up on the weather...

I noticed that on Japan Times website and other news sites, they don't seem to even mention it. Is that because they really aren't that big of a deal compared to a hurricane that would hit the US, for example?

Mike,

Note that the Japan Times is a newspaper, so the news on their website can often be more than 24 hours out of date.
