I am new to Japan. Where can I buy mountaineering boots in Tokyo? (boots that are good for cold and high altitude: Scarpa Vega, Sportiva Nepal, etc). Thanks.

Hi I had a friend show me a mall near the harbor front in Yokohama which had a whole floor of climbing gear including boots for sale. All the big US and Euro names with prices to match 2 years ago. Of course there is always shops like LL Bean (there were 3 in Tokyo 2 years ago). Sorry forgot the name of the mall but it was only 3 minutes from the sea so should be easy to find. Small town boy good luck

smalltownboy, maybe you were referring to this shop: http://bit.ly/15qilBon the south corner is a shop with a climbing wall inside, though I do not remember the shop name. You can drag the little guy in the upper left onto the intersection to get google's street view and see a street level photo of the shop: http://bit.ly/fn3aQGreg

The best outdoors shop I know of is the ICI outdoor shop in Kanda. It's located about 50 east of Jimbocho Station, Exit A5.
They have boots, crampons, and climbing gear as well as gortex gear, avalanche stuff, etc.

ICI (pronounced ii-shi-ii) in Kanda is OK. The ICI at Shin Okubo was better but has moved to Harajuku. Kamoshika in Takadanobaba is awesome. Calafate in Meijiro is sweet. VERY knowledgeable staff. Most climbing gyms stock gear also. The "Pump" & B-Pump gyms are well stocked. T-Wall gyms have rock climbing essentials & know what they're about too. Tokyo Bill has a good post with links here: http://outdoorjapanforums.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5681053951/m/34510088...
