Osaka areas 2009/5/31
Osaka City
I'm mightily confused by the various 'areas' in Osaka and how they're laid out and linked up. Is there a simple guide or can someone here sort me out? Specifically I'm interested in:

* Minami Senba
* Amerika Mura
* Dontombori
* Namba
* DenDen Town

Are these all separate and self-contained areas? Are they linked in any way (for example, is Namba a name for the general area or something)? My Osaka map doesn't really help me and google maps is useless.

My point is if I get lost, and ask for directions to say Namba, is that like asking for directions to London while in London? Just as an example, same question applies across

osaka is easy 2009/6/1
Sounds like you are a shopper!!!!
Osaka is easy to navigate so don't worry.
Try to access a Lonely Planet section on Osaka : its all explained there. Also, get hold of a subway map of Osaka which will include the JR lines (can download it)
1.Osaka is divided into Kita (north) around the JR station and Umeda;and Minima (south) around Namba and Shinsaibashi: these are connected from JR Osaka station by the Midosuji subway.
2. Tennoji is an area connected to the JR Osaka station by the JR Loop line
3. Dotonbori is in Namba
4. Amerika Mura is in Namba
5. Minima Senba is near Shinsaibashi subway stop, 1 stop north of Namba on the Midosuji subway
6. Den Den town is near Tennoji
Hope this helps..LP tells you where all these areas are and how to get to them from the various subway stations etc
Enjoy!

Tks 2009/6/1
Tks fmj. I do have the LP guide, but I find it a little confusing in this area. So it's (from general to specific)

Osaka ... Minami ... Namba ... DenDen Town, Dontombori, Ame-Mura etc.

PS Minami? Minima? :)

don't need Minami 2009/6/1
Kita and Minami mean North and South: so don't need them: Umeda area is the north (Kita) and Namba area is the south (Minami): Minami Senba is area around Shinsaibashi subway

Me thinks your lost... 2009/6/1
mgal,

I am in NYC but have spent time in Osaka on almost every trip to Japan. I love the city.

What you are asking for is general neighborhoods near and around Nanba. Nanba is both a neighborhood and a subway station. You will find it on the subway map.

The area(s) you are looking for are just north of Nanba station. Ifd say on the Midosuji Line, which will place you on the other side of the river, north of Nanba Station.

Try the Hommachi station for Minamisenba and DenDen Town. Try Shinsaibashi stations, for Amerikamura. Look for the gStatue of Liberty!h

Also, I am confused about gDontombori.h Do you mean Dontonbori? Which is a chain of stores or do you mean Doutonbori the shopping street. Both Nanba and Doutonbori are also north of Nanba Station and best accessed from that station. Just follow the shoppers!

My guess is that you are in Osaka, so I suggest that you pick up a city guide and a copy of the subway map. It is easy to get around Osaka by subway.

Oh, I believe that the Yotsubashi line and the Sennichimae line both go to Nanba.

Luck

map & location 2009/6/1
http://www.webmtabi.jp/200806/map_en.html

Minami Senba : north-eastern district from Shinsaibashi station.
Amerika Mura : south-western district from Shinsaibashi station.
Dontombori : areas along with Dotonbori river separating Shinsaibashi and Namba areas.
Namba : South of Dotonbori river
DenDen Town : East of Namba station or South of Nipponbashi station on Sakaisuji avenue.

so-called Minami 2009/6/1
Ts is correct. Dendentown is just located by Nankai Namba station.

Minami isn't an official place name. Therefore, so-called Minami area tends to extend, and people are confused. Once, we called following area Minami.
Get off subway at Shinsaibashi station and walk through Shinsaibashi shopping arcade. You will reach a small bridge and canal.
Dotonbori was the name of the canal, originally. But Dotonbori is the name of the district fronting on canal now.
The next arcade is Ebisubashi-suji shopping arcade. The area that went through the arcade is Sennichimae, and then you will reach Nankai Namba station soon.
Some other places are located in outskirt (west side or east side) of this route. (By the way, I suppose Minami-Senba is not so-called Minami area)

Tks 2009/6/1
Tks everyone. It was less about location and directions as my LP covers that sufficiently and more about the terminology being used and how these places connected with each other. I think I've got a better handle on it now.
