koyo for sure? 2009/6/2
Hello everyone,

I am considering a trip to Japan in autumn. My main goal would be to see the beautiful autumn foliage in places like Nikko, Hakone and Kyoto. Are the autumn colours more or less equally spectacular every year, or are there significant and unpredictable differences? Is there any likelihood that there are next to no colours at all?

Any advice or experience will be most appreciated – thanks a lot!

The colours do not vary significantly. There is no likelihood really that you will see no coloured leaves- for that to happen every single tree would have to have all its leaves blown off by some incredibly massive typhoon- it won't happen. Every year the same colours are seen at about the same time.

There are differences from year to year, but for people without prior viewing experience, it is impossible to tell. The colors are nice even in a "bad year".

Only if your timing is off, i.e. if you are too early or too late.
