It is a fish cake named Naruto, named after the sea straight between Shikoku and Awaji Island in Naruto City, where whirlpools (red swirly lines) can be observed.

Here is some general information on fish cakes of which the naruto fish cake is just one of many varieties:

It is called naruto (nothing to do with anime), steamed fish paste.
It comes in a long piece, you should slice it into small pieces.

Its name came from a big swirl (uzushio) at Naruto channel.

anime 2009/6/3
Not entirely, apparently the character is named such because of his fondness for the ramen garnished with naruto kamaboko. Also, there are various swirl themes throughout the manga.

I said it has nothing to do with the anime character because the kamaboko called "naruto" comes first, not the other way round. ;)

Anime character Naruto may have semething to do with naruto, but the naruto kamaboko was named after the great whirl. That's all.

I realized that's what you meant ;)

Just wanted to point out that they do have a relation, but as you mentioned either the food inspired the anime and not the other way around, or they are both named after the whirlpools.
