Japanese Yen Notes 2009/6/6 06:51
I'm concerned about having notes that are too large, can someone tell me what notes are commonly used?

Thanks

1000, 5000 and 10000 yen notes are frequently used in everyday life.

Japan is one of the few countries in the world that this is never an issue. You can hand over a 10,000 yen note when paying for a 120 yen item at a convenience store and the staff will not care at all. As Uji says, all three notes are used commonly in everyday life.

The only people I have ever found to be reluctant to accept 10,000 yen notes are the ladies at train station kiosks (kiosks sell sweets and newspapers etc.)- best not to go above 1,000 yen with them.

10,000 yen notes are often not appreciated for small fees in taxis, buses and small temples.
