Kiso Valley Itinerary - is it possible? 2009/6/28
Kiso Valley
Problem: From Matsumoto I want to get to Kiso, hike the trail, and be in Shibu Onsen near Yudanaka Station for dinner at Ryoken.

Is this possible?

From Matsumoto July 23rd, 2009:
Take 7:05 train to Nakatsugawa Station (Magome) arrives 8:21.
Leave bags in Locker.

Take cab into town.  Begin hike at 9am.

Hike 3 hours to Tsumago.

Take taxi back to Nakatsugawa Station (Magome)
12:49 train arrives 14:03 in Matsumoto and continues on to Nagano arriving at 14:53.

Transfer to private train line (Nagano Elc.Rail) and arrive at Yudanaka Station at 15:45.

Questions:
1. Are there large lockers at Nakatsugawa Station?
2. Will there be taxis in Magome and Tsumago?
3. How long is the taxi from Tsumago to Nakatsugawa Station (Magome)?
4. Can the hike be done and enjoyed in 3 hours?
5. Is this too much, too crazy for one day?

Thanks again and as always all help is much appreciated.

It should be possible, but I personally would try to handle the luggage differently. The taxi ride back to Nakatsugawa sounds time-consuming and costly.

How about the following plan?

Leave your luggage at Matsumoto Station.

07:15 depart Matsumoto by limited express train
08:08 arrive Nagiso

08:15 depart nagiso Station by bus
08:22 arrive Tsumago

WALK TO MAGOME

11:55 depart Magome by bus
12:20 arrive Nakatsugawa Station

12:49 depart Nakatsugawa Station by limited express train
14:03 arrive Matsumoto

Get you luggage

14:26 depart Matsumoto by local train
15:40 arrive in Nagano

15:58 depart Nagano by Nagano Dentetsu
16:49 arrive Yudanaka Station

3.5 hours should be ample of time for the walk (good walkers should be able to do it in around 2 hours), but you might not have much time to see much of the two towns themselves. Note also that museums in Tsumago do not open until 9am.

Note also that Shibu Onsen is 2 kilometers from Yudanaka Station.

Kiso valley Itinerary - is it possible? 2009/6/28
Uji,
Thank you for the reply!

The bus from Magome to Nakatsugawa Station run at 11:00 and 12:30 according to the bus schedule. The 11:55 bus is going the other way I think.

Also your suggestion would get me to the onsen a hour later (due to stopping in Matsumoto to get my baggage).

My original option still seems best to me but it relies on two major things.

1. Can I store luggage in Nakatsugawa station or Magome itself?

2. Can I take a taxi from Tsumago to Nakatsugawa station?

Thanks again. Uji-san you have helped me so much with planning this trip!

Luggage issue solved 2009/6/28
A post from 5/5/2009 in the Japan-guide.com forums says that there are small - medium and large lockers at Nakatsugawa station.

Great. That is 1 down. Now the taxis!

Can I take a taxi from Tsumago to Nakatsugawa station?

Yes. I believe there are always taxis waiting around the bus terminal of Tsumago. Expect to pay around 4000 yen. Also, expect to pay around 3000 yen for the taxi ride from Nakatsugawa to Magome. These are very rough, quick estimates.

Note also that in my suggestion, I calculated 3.5 hours for the walk. If you reduce it by an hour, you could probably be in Yudanaka an hour earlier. And sorry for the mistake with the bus timetable.
