Izu Peninsula Hotel with Ocean Views 2009/6/30
Izu Peninsula
Hi, I would like to visit the Izu Peninsula. Are there western style hotels, or hotels with some western rooms, right on the coast? Preferably upmarket ones. Looking at nice rocky coastline. Thanks.

The following huge onsen ryokan in Dogashima (Western coast of Izu) has some Western style rooms with views onto the ocean and rocky coastline. I enjoyed my stay there a lot:

Driving /cycling the Izu Peninsula 2009/6/30
Thanks Uji. Is it easy to drive around the region - are street signs in English? Also, is it easy to rent bicycles for daily exploration?

Is it easy to drive around the region - are street signs in English?

It is easy to drive along the major roads, but on minor roads many signs might be in Japanese only. There are some spectacular roads along the southern, southwestern and western coasts of the peninsula, and some nice toll-roads along the mountain ridges in the interior of the peninsula. Some can be quite curvy, but an experienced driver should have no problems. Driving in Japan is on the left. Special concentration is required if you are not used to that.

Also, is it easy to rent bicycles for daily exploration?

There seem to be some rental places, but frankly, it might not be so easy to find them unless you do research in advance.

This one (the hotel building itself is relatively old I believe) is my favorite in terms of location and view. Atop a hill overlooking a bay. Nice rocky beaches nearby, and walking trails along the coast as well.

GPS in English? 2009/7/1
Thanks for the suggestions. Another question about driving - are GPS systems available in English at car rental companies? Would they be easy to use in Japan?

gps 2009/7/1
they are generally only available in Japanese. They are generally simple to figure out by trial and error. The easiest is to search for destinations by phone number.
