Advance tickets to Koyasan 2009/7/1
Koyasan
We are planning to visit Koyasan in mid August, traveling from Kurashiki to Koyasan, overnighting in Koyasan, then on to Kyoto. This looks a bit complicated for the novice Japan traveler but doable. Problem is we are probably using a JR pass for most travel, that won't get us to Koyasan, and it looks like you can only buy tickets for the Namba line that goes there in or around Osaka. This means we'd have to travel from Kurashiki to Osaka, get to Namba station, buy tickets to Koyasan, and proceed (and be sure to get to Koyasan by 5 PM or we don't get into our temple!!)
Is there anyway to buy/reserve train tickets to to Koyasan ahead of time? Problem is we won't be staying in Kyoto or Osaka before we go to Koyasan so we would have no opportunity to do this earlier in the trip. (unless such tickets can be purchased in Tokyo - is that possible?)

travel to Koyasan 2009/7/1
In April I traveled from Miyajima to Koyasan. From Kurashiki it is under four hours. At Shinosaka you take the Midousuji Subway to Namba - it's easy to buy the subway ticket - and then you can buy your train ticket at Namba all the way to Koyasan. It's quite easy....You can check out the routing on hyperdia.com. Enjoy!

If you take express trains from Namba to Koyasan, seat reservations are not possible.

If you take a limited express train, then seat reservations are mandatory. On most days, the trains do not get booked out and can be booked just before departure on the day of travel. Mid August, however, is a very busy travel season, and for peace of mind you might can make seat reservations at major travel agencies across Japan.

Thanks - recommended travel agents? 2009/7/2
Thanks to the ubiquitous Uji for the helpful response. It is indeed because we will be visiting Koyasan at the height of the peak travel season -- Aug 12/13 -- that I am concerned about train reservations - otherwise would just wing it.
Can anyone recommend a good travel agent in Tokyo where english in spoken and who could arrange Koyasan rail tickets for us? Also can travel agents arrange seat reservations on JR trains (we will probably be travelling elsewhere via rail pass) or do you need to go to JR offices directly for that purpose?
Thanks again.

RE: reservation 2009/7/2
These two are major Japanese travel agents, I think, so they will handle reservation both for JR trains and for Ltd. Express KOYA trains of Nankai.
Maybe you have to purchase some tickets at the station(s) of Nankai, maybe not.
Also Nankai Group has a travel agent, but I've not found its web site in English.

This inquiry form doesn't seem to use Secure Socket Layer. You can hide real names of you and your company (organization) due to lack of security, if you state so in the inquiry.

You can not go directly to Koyasan Sta. by train. You have to make a transfer at Gokurakubashi Sta. to a cable car.
http://www.nankai.co.jp/global/routemap/nankai.html
There will be only 4 Ltd. Express trains on Koya Line of Nankai to match your hope, if you leave Kurashiki on the same day.
As to a group of 4 members or more, reservation for Ltd. Express trains of Nankai may be made 3 months before the date of ride through a travel agent. Otherwise, wait until one month before the date.
JR reservation can be made from 10:00 of the day one month before the date of ride by Japan Standard Time.

Not via subway ? 2009/7/2
: it looks like you can only buy tickets for the Namba line that goes there in or around Osaka.

I think you can change from JR to Nankai, not via Osaka Municipal Subway, though it needs transfer at Osaka Sta., which is neighboring to Shin-Osaka Sta. In this way, you will not have to purchase non-JR tickets at least until you get to a station of Nankai.

Via subway:
Shin-Osaka 新大阪 Sta. of JR-West
| Walk
Shin-Osaka 新大阪 Sta. of Osaka Municipal Subway
| Midosuji Line; about 15 min; Fare: 270 yen per adult
Namba なんばSta. of Osaka Municipal Subway
| Walk
Namba なんば Sta. of Nankai

Not via subway:
Shin-Osaka 新大阪 Sta. of JR-West: Track 15 / 16
| Within 3 min.
Osaka 大阪 Sta.: around 10 min. for transfer and wait
| About 10 - 15 min.
Shin-Imamiya 新今宮 Sta. of JR-West: West Gate
| Walk
Shin-Imamiya 新今宮 Sta. of Nankai
Details

Shinkansen trains from the west may arrive at Tracks 20 - 26 on the 4F (sliding to right on this map).
Local / Rapid / Special Rapid trains for Osaka will leave from Tracks 15 and 16 on the 1F (lower right, sliding down on this map).

Passing through the West Gate, you will soon find Nankai.
