Day trip to Kyoto from Tokyo 2009/7/3
Kyoto City
Hi,

I plan to take the JR bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto for a 1-day trip - leave early in the morning to Kyoto and return to Tokyo on a evening train.

I have never been to Kyoto and I know 1-day is not much time to spend in Kyoto, but it would be appreciated if you could provide some suggestions on what I should considering doing during my day in Kyoto as well as any words of advice or feedback. Any information would be most appreciated.

Also, what is the best way to get travel within Kyoto (buses, subway or taxi)?

Thank you in advance for your assistance and comments.

Depending on your personally preferred pace of travel, you have the time to see about two to five sights. I recommend to select some that are in the same part of the city rather than spend your limited time to jump all around the city:

If you have limited time, I recommend to use rail bound traffic whenever possible and a taxi from the closest station to the sight, if not within walking distance.

Just 1 day! 2009/7/5
Ugh, just one day. That does not give you enough time. However if that is all you have then visit as many gardens as you can! I'm more about the strolling /landscape gardens so I would suggest Kiyomizadera Temple, Gion district and Golden Pavillion.

If all you have is a day then I would highly suggest going on a guided day tour. Ythe one I went one was through Sunrise tours / JTB and we saw 3 shrines, went to the Kyoto handicraft center and visted 2 more shires. Lots to cover but if you only have 1 day then it's perfect for you.
