onsen for young children 2009/7/3
Hi! I am thinking of visiting Japan with my 3 year-old son and one of the things I'd like to do is visit an onsen. I'm wondering if they allow young children of that age to enter a public onsen, and whether he can accompany me to the ladies' section. Also, is the temperature of the onsen water generally too hot for toddlers? If so, can I book a private onsen and adjust the water temperature myself so it would not be too hot for my son? Is it allowed to tamper with the temperature if the bath is privately reserved for a short period of time, eg at some ryokans? Many thanks in advance!

I stayed in a Hakone ryokan last year and my 4 yr old son followed me into the onsen for ladies. There is no others around and he had fun spraying water everywhere. The onsen itself however is too hot for him.
He enjoyed a lot, and he also like wearing the kids Yukata.

private onsen 2009/7/4
We stayed at a ryokan with our 4 year old and made use of their private onsen on site. It was much too hot for full body submersion for our son, but he did enjoy kicking his feet and splashing his hands in the onsen. The water trickled in via an open spout so it was not possible to change the temperature. If possible, I recommend the private onsen experience, especially with children as it gave us the freedom to introduce him to the onsen at our own pace with privacy. He spent most of the time excitedly splashing which was not a problem given that we were the only ones on site.

Age is not the issue. All who wear diapers are to keep themselves from the tub, and all who don't are allowed in.

Toddlers are welcomed to opposite gender bathrooms accompanied by the proper gender parent or other adults.

At large facilities, there are often several tubs with different tempertures. On the other hand, in smaller facilities, they sometimes fail to keep the right temperture and the tub is often too cold. The "ordinary temperture" of an onsen tub water is supposed to be 37-42 degrees centigrade.

You can request private bath for any reason you can think of, where you will be filling the tub yourself, but when you want to have a ready-filled public bath temperture arranged, you need to talk to the manager. If there is no one else using the bath, the manager would usually be happy to adjust the temperture for you. However, keep in mind that this may take time. So it would be best if you take a peek in the bathroom before hand to see if the conditions are ideal. Of course, if there is anyone bathing, be sure you enter naked, too, as entering with clothes on may embarrass others who are naked.

Have fun!

nuruyu 2009/7/4
There are some ryokans or hotels around the country that have a "nuruyu" onsen of which tub water is colder than 39 degrees centigrade.

I recommend that you check out if there are any such ryokans/hotels nearby your destination. And if you're staying at an onsen resort area, you can usually just take a nuruyu bath of ryokans/hotels other than where you're staying the night though the opening hours for visitors only to an onsen are ordinarily limited to the daytime.

Booking a private onsen 2009/7/4
I think the best thing you can do is book a private onsen. That way you can be sure about the heat of the onsen (they're very hot), your son can be as loud and enthusiastic as he wants without disturbing other people, and you and your son can have lots of fun together.

Thanks 2009/7/4
Ha ha, do all kids like to spray water around, and kick and make a ruckus in the tub? And I thought my son was being exceptionally naughty! Thank you all, for your replies.
