Rail pass seat reservations 2009/7/6
Upon my arrival at Narita, I plan on visiting the JR desk and exchanging my voucher. At this same time I would like to make all my seat reservations on non reserved Shinkansen and LEX trains for my entire 14 day trip. Is this possible, common to do? I'm assuming they will give me a paper ticket.

There is no such thing as "non reserved shinkansen", Shinkansens usually have two sections "Unreserved" Section and "reserved section" (plus green cars), if you need a reservation then you sit in the "reserved" section. If you want to use the "unreserved" section, then you do not need to make a reservation.

"NEX" not "LEX".

Any case yes you can make all your seat reservations apon arrival if you want to.

In reply to Express Train. Thank you for your info! I meant to say unreserved. I'm using a 14 day JR Rail Pass. As far as I know, NEX refers to Narita Express. My LEX, refers to the Hyperdia's def of limited express. FYI, You can make reservations on UNreserved seats on the slower Shinkansen and LEX JR trains using the pass.

I think you might be using some incorrect terminology. It is impossible to make a "reservation" for a "unreserved" section of a train.

You can only make a reservation for seats in the "reserved" seat sections on trains that have reserved seating. That's why its called "reserved".

If you have a JR pass you just show the JR Pass to sit in the unreserved seating section.

If you want a reserved seat then you can make the reservations all at once if you wanted to.

Additional question 2009/7/15
Hi, please allow me to post an additional question here.

I've been confused by different answers in this site. Some answers said seat reservation outside of Japan is not possible.

But what I've read from below link is:
passengers who plan on using the JAPAN RAIL PASS to travel on Shinkansen and some Limited Express services can use this site to reserve seats before arrival in Japan.

I hope someone can clear my doubts here.

I'm using JR-Pass on my journey Tokyo-Hokkaido-Tokyo. Can I make seat reservation through online one month before I depart to Japan?

Thanks.

Rail Pass Reservations 2009/7/15
My husband and I just returned from Japan and we also used the 14 Rail Pass. It was great but there are a few places that it won't work like Kawaguchiko. We had to purchase non-JR train tickets seperately with yen. Not a big problem. Pre-reservation wasn't necessary. In fact, we had one car all to ourselves and always were able to find a seat except for the one limited express (I think) out of Tokyo during morning rush hour. We just stood for a short ride and held onto the loop. All part of the experience! We loved the dependability and ease of traveling by train. Driving would have been insane in Tokyo or Kyoto! Have fun!

Ticket to be collected day before! 2009/7/15
Hi Jim,

The website says you can.
"Reservations can be made from one month before your departure date up until 5:00 p.m. (17:00, Japan Standard Time) 3 days prior to your departure date. "

But note the tickets collection is to be in Japan and a day before your travel. So if you are planning to travel on the day you arrive in Japan, this will not work for you.

"Collect your Reserved Seat Limited-Express Ticket by 9:00 p.m. (21:00, Japan Standard Time) the day before you travel at any of the locations specified by East Japan Railway Company."

Thanks 2009/7/15
Lee Ann, thanks for sharing your experience. I worried for the seats availability because of my trip will be on Christmas & New Year holidays.

Liem, thanks for your answer. It seems like online seat reservation is still possible as long as I am able to collect the tickets a day before.

I will be in Tokyo on 25/Dec/09. And I would like to make reservation for below trips:

Shinkansen Hayate (Tokyo to Hachinohe) on 28/Dec morning.
Ltd.Exp Super Hakucho (Hachinohe to Hakodate) on 28/Dec afternoon.
Ltd.Exp Hakuto (Hakodate to Noboribetsu) on 29/Dec morning or afternoon.
Ltd Exp Super Hakuto (Noboribetsu to Sapporo) on 30/Dec morning or afternoon.
Necessary trains from Sapporo to Tokyo on 2/Jan.

For my case, I am able to collect the tickets once I reach Narita airport on 25/Dec. If reservation can be made online, then it will be a good news for me!

Up to here, I got another question. After I bought the JR-Pass, it is just a voucher to be exchanged into an actual pass in Japan later. In this case, how am I going to make online reservation using the voucher (before travel to Japan)? Do I still need a credit card or just using some kind of serial number on that voucher for making the reservation?

Sorry for posting so many questions and thanks in advanced. :)

Shin kansen reservation with rail pass 2009/7/23
Hello Jim.
I just called Eki-net to get sure answer because I was in exactly the same situation.
Any way, you can reserve seats online ahead of time & go to exchange office with reservation # then receive tickets.
* You will need register with eki-net(free) and credit card info.
* If the tickets are not picked up, it will be charged on the card, so I recommend not to forget to cancel

Have a nice trip!
