Looking for cool outdoor onsen 2009/7/7
My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Japan at the end of the month, and I'm trying to find a onsen off the beaten-path. Our first four days are in Tokyo, but after that we have a week that isn't planned out yet. I'm not concerned with how far we would have to travel, so I was looking into Beppu as it seems like maybe a less crowded alternative to Hakone? However, both places are big tourist destinations and seem to boast mostly indoor hot spring facilities. I'm much more interested in finding some outdoor hot springs that maybe offer private areas for couples, and are less commercial.

It seems like there are some cool ocean-side hot springs on the Izu Pennisula, but I was only looking at pictures of them and don't know where they are exactly (or how expensive they are). Then I thought that maybe there's some cool places tucked away in the mountains instead.

Basically, I'm getting inundated with tons of search results on my own and was wondering if anyone could recommend any "hidden treasures".

Thanks!

Beppu is very far away, busy and not particularly famous for outdoor baths, although there are a few, including one on the roof of the Suginoi Ryokan with spectacular views (not obstructed by any fence) over the city. It is gender separated and costs 2000 yen for a day-visit. In many ways, probably not the type of bath you are looking for.

Takaragawa Onsen is a huge outdoor bath in the mountains of Gunma. Depending on timing, it can be calm or very crowded:

The Okuhida area in the Japan Alps has some of very spectacular outdoor baths. I especially enjoyed the baths of the Suimeikan, whose main bath, I believe, is gender-mixed:

Kurokawa Onsen on Kyushu has also some spectacular baths. My favorite is the Yamamizugi.

I'm not sure if this will be much help but I'm hoping someone else on here will know the actual name of the place I'm talking about...

We will be staying at Yudanaka Shimaya Ryokan in December and there is apparently a private hilltop onsen with an amazing view, particularly at sunset, that the Ryokan owner is going to drive us to. It costs 2500yen for 50mins in a private onsen so it sounds amazing but I haven't been there yet to comment!

If you haven't heard of Yudanaka it's near Nagano and is where you go to see the Japanses snow monkeys bathing in the onsen.

Maybe someone knows more details on this place for you.

Where's Suimeikan ryokan that you recommended above ? I've searched and can't find the English name in my Road Atlas Japan and I've also visited the Japanese website. I suspect it is near Shirahone, anyway I can't see it, can you help ?

Information 2009/7/7
There's a list of onsens on this site around the Kanto area.

Should be able to find decent, not overly crowded ones. They provide a lot of information as well including type and official website. Hope this helps, good luck

onsen site 2009/7/8
This is a good site for researching some onsen:

For a neat place to stay (and I liked it better than Onsenkaku at Takaragawa), try Honke Bankyu Bankyu:

Thank you both 2009/7/8
Thanks to banana & spendthrift. Actually, I have been using the secret onsen site but it's great to get the honke bankyu bankyu site in English--don't know why I kept getting to the Japanese site which made it v difficult to figure its exact location. The ryori food reminded me of a great onsen ryokan in Kyushu. How long would you estimate driving from centre of Nikko to this ryokan ?

Where's Suimeikan ryokan that you recommended above ?

It is in Shin-Hodaka Onsen in the Okuhida region of Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture:
http://www.hikyou.jp/gifu/sinhodaka/suimeikan/suimeikan...

Suimeikan has great baths, but the ryokan does not look very nice, at least from the outside.

Here is a map centered on it:

Uji, one last question 2009/7/8
Thanks so much, I am clear now. Is the road leading up to the onsen ok to drive during winter, say early February ?

Yes, it is open around the year. But it might be snow covered.

One of top 3 onsens 2009/7/21
Kusatsu in Gumma prefecture not far from Nikko

relatively speaking 2009/7/21
Kusatsu in Gumma prefecture not far from Nikko

Note that it's relatively "not far". It's still about 2 hours by car or 4-6 hours by shinkansen and bus.
