Shinjuku to Narita Airport 2009/7/27
Narita
Hi,
Is there a lower-cost alternative to the Narita Express for this trip yet with minimum or simple train transfers? I dont mind if it takes a bit longer. Thanks.

Shinjuku to Narita Airport 2009/7/27
Kum,

Yes, you can take the JR Yamanote Line round to Nippori and change there to the Keisei "Limited express" (which is just a regular commuter train) for nearly one third of the cost of the Narita Express.

The transport options are all described on this very site...

The NEX&Suica lowers the cost for the Narita Express considerably, assuming that you can also use the Suica part of the package:
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2359_002.html

But it is still a few hundred yen more expensive than the alternative mentioned by Dave.

RE: Shinjuku to Narita Airport 2009/7/27
As far as I know, an N'EX ticket in a Suica & N'EX package is for a ride from the airport only. (Is there a variation including an N'EX ticket to the airport?)
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/suica-nex/index.html

Route A. (mentioned above)
1,190 yen = 190 yen (JR) + 1,000 yen (Keisei)
Shinjuku Sta. of JR-East
| Yamanote Line's outer loop (for Ueno), about 20 min.
Nippori Sta. of JR-East
| - Change to Keisei, within 10 min.
Nippori Sta. of Keisei
| Keisei Main Line (except liners)
Airport Terminal 2 Sta. / Narita Airport Sta. of Keisei

In the hours with no Keisei Ltd. Express trains for Narita Airport, cases may exist where Route B. results in an earlier arrival.

Route B.
1,450 yen, about 120 min.
Shinjuku Sta.
| Chuo - Sobu Lines Local # , about 25 min.
| #: Except those destined to Tokyo in early and late hours
Kinshicho Sta.
- Change to neighboring platform, within 10 min.
Kinshicho Sta.
| Rapid Airport Narita, about 85 min.
Airport Terminal 2 Sta. / Narita Airport Sta.
Note:
Rapid from Kinshicho Sta.: One or two trains in one hour
- Weekdays: The earliest at 05:12, the last at 20:21.
- Sat. and Holidays: The earliest at 05:12, the last at 20:29.
Trains at 18:mm have two parts for different directions;
be sure to get on a car destined to Narita Airport.

I took the Keisei line (1000yen) to ueno whenever I don't have an activated JR Pass. It is a very inexpensive transportation but if you are going to Shinjuku with plenty of luggage, may be you should consider the other options like the package mentioned above.

station details 2009/7/27
Thanks all for your ideas. Yes I do have luggage, so are the transfers at Kinshicho or Nippori easy to do? Do you have a layout of the stations or are there English directions at the stations? Can the Suica card be used for the whole journey? I can't afford to be lost as I'm catching a plane! Thanks.

RE: station details 2009/7/28
Transfer from Ueno to Keisei Ueno will cost a longer time with luggage if you don't know the way in advance.

: are there English directions at the stations?
I suppose you don't have to worry about that as to Shinjuku, Nippori and Kinshicho; major railroad stations in and around Tokyo have directions and/or signs in English, I think.

: Can the Suica card be used?
Yes. The both routes are within Suica - PASMO area. Keep e-money of your Suica card enough for the fares.

When is your plane scheduled to leave? Are you going to the airport on a weekday? (There will be no national holiday before 21 September 2009).
I can not say for the present which of the two routes sounds better.

In Shinjuku Sta., trains are scheduled to leave
from Track 15 for Nippori route,
from Track 13 for Kinshicho route.
It depends on ticket gates how easy you can catch your train.

: are the transfers at Kinshicho or Nippori easy to do?
: Do you have a layout of the stations?

- Nippori Sta. of JR-East: Guide map
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/stations/e1184.html
Your train comes from the north (from the right on this map) into Track 10.
On the north half of the platform, there are escalators, a stare and an elevator for you to go up.
Advancing on the pathway, getting through Transfer Gate, you find an escalator and an elevator to go down to a Keisei platform.

- Kinshicho Sta. of JR-East: Guide map (in Japanese):
http://www.jreast.co.jp/estation/stations/609.html
Your train comes from the west (from the left on this map) into Track 2.
On the west half of the platform, there are escalators, stares and an elevator for you to go down.
Advancing on the pathway, going up to the neighboring platform, you get to Track 4 where you wait for a Rapid Airport Narita.

time 2009/7/28
When is your plane scheduled to leave? Are you going to the airport on a weekday?
My plane leaves at 8.30pm on a weekday. I need to checkin by 7.30pm. Will I be caught in the rush hours? Thanks.

Shinjuku to Narita Airport 2009/7/28
Kum,

If it is an international flight, then surely you need to be at the airport at least two hours before take-off. You will therefore be travelling in the evening peak on the Yamanote Line and Keisei Line out to Narita with luggage. Unless you are a glutton for punishment, I would strongly recommend taking the Narita Express or Limousine bus directly from Shinjuku to the airport.

With luggage, i believe limousine bus is a better choice too.
Dragging luggage to change/find platform during those hours could really slow you down.
Another option could be go to Ueno first and put the luggage in a locker, brewse around the area and catch the train around 5 something.

Rush and luggage 2009/7/28
: My plane leaves at 8.30pm on a weekday.

I suppose you'd better get out of Shinjuku by 04:30 pm, i.e. by 16:30.
When your limousine / train reaches the airport, get off at the nearest bus stop / station for your plane. There are 3 bus stops of limousine, 2 stations each on Keisei and JR.

- Limousines:
- - Hotels:
http://www.limousinebus.co.jp/en/timetable/narita/shinj...
- - Shinjuku Sta.

: Will I be caught in the rush hours?

You'd better make a transfer by 17:00.
(That may be not enough in autumn because there will be pre-rush crowds of school children.)
If your luggage makes you walk slower than usual, consider taking a reserved seat on a Narita Express.

Shinjuku, Transfer Sta. & Time, Arrival;
by 15:11 Y, Nippori at 15:47, Narita Airport at 16:57;
by 15:31 Y, Nippori at 16:07, Narita Airport at 17:20;
by 15:42 C, Kinshicho at 16:19, Narita Airport at 17:42;
by 15:51 Y, Nippori at 16:26, Narita Airport at 17:33;
by 16:09 Y, Nippori at 16:47, Narita Airport at 17:56;
by 16:11 C, Kinshicho at 16:48, Narita Airport at 18:09.
Y: Track 15: Yamanote Line's outer loop (for Ueno);
C: Track 13: Chuo - Sobu Lines Local (for Tsudanuma or Chiba).
