Winter travel on Hokkaido 2009/7/31 Sapporo I will be in Sapporo in Feb 2010 for 5 days max, apart from Sapporo any suggestions on where our time would be best spent to see some sights considering our limited time, we will have a JR pass by Kevo53   ... 2009/8/1 I recommend to pick sights according to personal interests. For example, go to a ski resort (e.g. Niseko, Rusutsu) if you like skiing. Or a hot spring resort (e.g. Noboribetsu, Jozankei) if you like hot springs. Or another city if you like cities (e.g. Otaru or Hakodate). Or Asahikawa if you like zoos. by Uji rate this post as useful Make the most of it 2009/8/1 Kevo, if you have a JR pass then squeeze it dry mate. I highly recommend the train trip to Abashiri. It takes about 5 hours. There is usually a special train running in February called the Sea Ice Express or Okhotsk No Kaze. Nice train with big panoramic windows. You could do the 2 hour sea ice cruise out of Abashiri in the morning and go back to Sapporo on the afternoon train ( same one ). I must say however that the entire thing relies on some good weather and I was lucky enough to hit the jackpot when I did it last year.
