Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route 2009/8/2
Toyama
What kind of clothing will be suitable for a trip to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in early/mid Aug? Will there be great temperature change?

Hello there. Mid August is hot everywhere in Japan, apart from the summit of Mt Fuji! The Alpine route is high, but not really high enough for it to get cold - it will be hot hot hot at sea level, hot as you go up, then probably pleasantly warm at the highest parts, no colder than that. Tip - dress in thin layers so you can take something off or put something on. One big thick layer with one thin underneath is a bad way to do things - only gives you two options. Enjoy the trip. Beware if during the Obon period in mid-Aug - will be very busy, like everywhere in Japan!

I agree that you should go in thin layers so you can adjust as you go up/down.

I just checked the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route official guide webpage, and they say for Murodo (the highest point in the route at altitude of 2,450 meters) for mid-August, the average high temperature is 19 degrees C, with the low of 7 degrees C (a day's average is 13 degrees C). This means it will be over 10 degrees C cooler than Tokyo at the highest = coolest point.

If it is cloudy and windy, it can be rather chilly (even during daytime, it can feel like around 10 degrees). Likewise, if it is sunny and there is little wind, it can feel almost as hot as down in the valley.

Thank you all for the advice on weather and clothing as well as the official website. It's useful. Temperature around 10 - 13 degree C with wind can be rather cool. Putting on thin layers seems to be more flexible.

I was just back from the tateyama kurobe alpine route. The weather was fine in general. Putting on a T-shirt plus a jacket at the highest point of the mountain was fine. The scenery is grand and beautiful.
