Accommodation Kyoto during festivals 2009/8/6
Kyoto City
I`m planning to go to Kyoto 13th to 17th of August. Is getting accommodation likely to be a problem due to festivals around that time? I plan to find accommodation when I get there rather than in advance.
Any recommendations for reasonable accommodation around 7000-8500 mark, for 2 people?
Thanks

Because that is a time when a lot of people travel within Japan, I would recommend reserving accommodation advance. Also you would not really want to be spending time looking for a hotel that you could otherwise spend on sightseeing :)

With your budget, you would be looking at a single/semi-double (double use), double, or twin room at a business hotel, such as Toyoko Inn (Kyoto), Comfort Inn (Kyoto Gojo), or APA Hotel (Kyoto Eki Horikawadori) for example.

Book Kyoto now! 2009/8/6
Hello J.Shaftoe.
You REALLY NEED to book rooms if you want to be in Kyoto 13th to 17th Aug. 16th is Daimonji fest, one of the most popular of the year. Kyoto as a city gets literally 'fully booked' at key times like cherry blossom, autumn leaves and mid summer Obon. Please please please do not turn up looking for a room. Kyoto tourist info at the station have a written sigh which they hang on the door - it says 'Sorry, Kyoto hotels are all full - go to Osaka'. I dont want you to have to experience this! I hate to be negative but cheap Kyoto hotels will be hard to come by now; you might have to stretch your budget a bit. Alternatively you can do as the sign says and go to Osaka! Lots more cheap hotels here and only 15mins to Kyoto by bullet train. The hotel suggestions above are good bets for Kyoto, but sadlt probably full. Good luck!

You could try the Holiday inn Kyoto.

Do you have a JR pass ? 2009/8/8
If you have a JR pass then I highly recommend Shinosaka. There are a number of hotels around the station including two Toyoko Inns. Shinosaka to Kyoto is 15' by shinkansen. If you have to purchase regular tickets and want to avoid the shinkansen surcharge by using regular trains the times vary with train types but even then expect only 30' app. Staying at the next nearest place is a strategy I frequently use when rooms and prices are at a premium.
