Then you could start early and do the Hakone round trip as a day trip and get back to Tokyo for the night :) Because ryokans (most of them) want to have advance reservation - because they serve dinner at a relatively early time, they want to be prepared - so looking for one on the day might be difficult, and also depending on exactly where the ryokan is located, it might limit your itinerary (you might have to backtrack, for example).
