Tokyo to Nikko on Friday 14th August 2009/8/11
Nikko
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on travelling to Nikko on Friday the 14th of August. My husband is working in Tokyo until Thursday night and we fly out of Narita airport on Saturday and thought a trip to Nikko on Friday/Saturday morning might be an option but I am wondering if it's best to get the train up and back or maybe hire a car to allow more flexibility?

I am wondering also if the traffic is likely to be very bad over this weekend due to the holiday? I have heard that the trains are very busy during this period which is why I am thinking hiring a car might be a good option.

Any advice would be appreciated!.

thank you.

car - no!!!!! 2009/8/11
Nikko will be packed, packed, PACKED! like all tourist sites during Obon.

Please DONT get a car - The Tokyo to Nikko route is like one big bottle neck, thet gets more and more jammed as it nears Nikko, and esp around the lake.

Sadly you will just have to be prepared for lots of people. I would go with the train option. You might have to stand, but at least you will not be stuck in traffic. You probably wont be able to get a hire car now anyway - sold out for Obon (probably)

Nikko at Obon 2009/8/11
Josie,

Surprisingly, the Spacia trains to Nikko in the morning on Friday 14th still have seats available, but I would have to agree with the comments of the poster above that you should be prepared for crowds in Nikko at Obon. Definitely avoid travelling by car.

Thank you for your suggestions, we will certainly not be hiring a car!. It sounds like the train will be an option so I will look into the suggestion about Friday morning.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out!. All the best Jo
