Rail pass: Tokyo-Hakone- Kyoto-Osaka 2009/8/11
I am planning a 10 days visit in Japan landing in Narita, then spending 4 days in Tokyo, 2-3 days in Hakone and ending 3 days in Kyoto and Nara. I fly out of Osaka kensai. What would be the most economical way to travel using rail passes?

If you are going one-way from Narita - Tokyo - Kyoto - Kansai only, then 7-day Japan Rail Pass does not pay off; it is better to purchase individual tickets. (7-Day Japan Rail Pass makes sense if you do a return trip Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka within a 7-day period.)

tickets 2009/8/12
Narita to Osaka one way [normal] ticket 5days only (600-800km).
(can stopover Tokyo, Odawara: Hakone nearest, and Kyoto)
this ticket about "20,000 YEN" , JR-PASS 7days "28,300 YEN".

so, u buy 1 or 2day ticket each areas (JR,BUS,subway...)

RE: NRT - Tokyo - Hakone - Kyoto - KIX 2009/8/12
The total of railroad costs: est. about 21,000 yen to 26,000 yen.

As to Odawara - Kansai-airport: 13,130 yen to 17,020 yen.
a. After a Hakone trip, you will move from Odawara to Kyoto, Nara, Kansai-airport within 4 days, right? If so, the fare is 8,720 yen and the Shinkansen charge (Odawara to Kyoto) is 4,410 yen (without reservation) to 5,120 yen (on a reserved seat on a busy-time day). In this case, you will buy one fare ticket and one Shinkansen ticket.
b-1. Case a. sounds short in time for Kyoto and Nara trips. Even if you add one or two days and make a round trip from Kyoto to Nara, the total of the fares is 10,040 yen, only 1,320 yen higher. In that case, you will buy 4 fare tickets and one Shinkansen ticket.
b-2. And, when you have to take a Ltd. Express Haruka from Kyoto to catch your plane, the Ltd. Express charge is 1,150 yen to 1,860 yen; you will also buy one Ltd. Express ticket.

As to Narita Airport / Airport Terminal 2 - Odawara and Hakone trip: est. around 8,000 yen.
Note: Narita Sta. is another station.
- 1. From the airport to a JR-East / Keisei station: 1,000 yen to 1,500 yen.
- 2. After you exit JR-East / Keisei, until you reach Shinjuku, incl. Tokyo trips: est. 2,000 yen.
- 3. From Shinjuku to Odawara (via Odakyu): 850 yen.
- 4. Hakone 2-day trips from Odawara (Hakone Freepass): 3,900 yen.
