Driving up to Fuji / around Fuji? 2009/8/13
Fujigoko
Hi,
I'll be driving in the Hakone region for a weekend in September and have some questions.

# How high can you go on Fuji with a private car? Are all the four 5th stations accessible?

# From which 5th station do you get the best view? (I don't intend to climb Fuji)

# What other interesting stops can I make around Fuji?

Thanks in advance.

Driving up to Fuji / around Fuji? 2009/8/13
I went all the way up to the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station by car. This is the best accessible by car. This is where I started my climb. Check though that the toll road (JPY 2300) is open in September. Depending on the weather, you can get great views of Mt Fuji during the drive.

This 5th station is at 2300 metres. There are shops & a large car park. Once again, check that is will be open first!

Drive in Hakone 2009/8/13
Hakone is actually not the best place to have a hire car. The classic sightseeing route using boat, cable car, mountain train etc shows you the best views and scenery. Using a car means you cannot do the classic loop, you will have to backtrack if you want to go on the boat or cable car. Sure there are some nice spots to drive around Hakone, but beware that traffic can be busy, esp on weekends.

How high can you go on Fuji with a private car?

To the 5th Station.

Are all the four 5th stations accessible?

Yes. But the Kawaguchiko one costs a toll as mentioned by the other user and is the furthest away from Hakone.

What other interesting stops can I make around Fuji?

Some ideas:

Thanks for replies 2009/8/14
Thanks for the replies so far. I'll make sure that the toll road is open, good to hear that all 5th stations should be accessible.

I'm not going by rental car but rather use my own, and as I'll have the family in the car (including two daughters, 5 years and 1 year) climbing Fuji is not an option. We'll start by staying at the Yunessun Inn and spa - their weird tea/wine/coffee/sake baths seems to be too odd to miss. And as we're already in the area, why not drive closer to Fuji while we're there?

Again, thanks a lot so far and if you have more input/info please let me know.
