Osaka to Mt Fuji (Best Course?) 2009/8/14
Fujigoko
Hi I'm planning to visit Japan from 29Sept-9th Oct, but my route is somewhat different from most:

Tokyo (stay 1 night) - Kyoto (stay 1 night) - Osaka (stay 3 nights - visit Kobe and explore Osaka) - Mt Fuji (Stay 1 night) - Tokyo

My difficulty is trying to decide how to get from Osaka to Mt Fuji and what to do there.

These are the things that I'll like to do there:
1. Catch sights of the magnificent Mt Fuji
2. Gotemba Premium Outlet
3. Hakone (Lake Ashi to catch sight of Mt Fuji)
4. Lake Kawaguchi
(Which lake will be better to catch a good view of Mt Fuji??

5. stay at a ryokan or onsen to catch a good view of Mt Fuji in the morning

And is it advisable to climb Mt Fuji on 6th Oct when I reach Mt Fuji?

If yes, which station will be best for ascension (considering where I'm coming from and the other activities that I'll like to do)?

So considering the things that I will like to do, what will be the best course of order to proceed?

Will appreciate if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

along the way? 2009/8/14
Oh by the way, I heard my sister talking about Oshin-hakkai village. She stayed there when she visited Japan last year. Will that be along the way?

Thanks.

If you want to see Hakone and Kawaguchiko, I recommend to allocate two nights. Otherwise, you don't have enough time.

The recommended route would be as follows:
Osaka - Odawara - Hakone - Gotemba - Kawaguchiko - Tokyo

Alternatively, I recommend to drop either Hakone or Kawaguchiko. If the sight of Mount Fuji is most important to you, I recommend to drop Hakone and visit only Gotemba and Kawaguchiko, because the chance of seeing the mountain is higher from Kawaguchiko than from Hakone.

And is it advisable to climb Mt Fuji on 6th Oct when I reach Mt Fuji?

To the summit? No. It is not advisable to climb Mount Fuji outside the official climbing season. Furthermore, you have no time to do so. It takes about 24 hours.

I heard my sister talking about Oshin-hakkai village. She stayed there when she visited Japan last year. Will that be along the way?

Yes, it can be visited between Gotemba and Kawaguchiko.

So my suggested route for a 1-night stay is:
Osaka - (direct hikari train) - Mishima - (direct bus or trains via Numazu) - Gotemba (with shuttle bus ride to Gotemba Outlets) - (bus) - Oshino Hakkai - (bus) - Kawaguchiko - (bus or bus/train) - Tokyo

I recommend to leave Osaka very early in the morning. Three buses per day go directly from Gotemba to Oshino Hakkai.

If there is no time for Oshino Hakkai on the first day, you can relatively easily visit it from Kawaguchiko on day 2.

Osaka to Mt Fuji (Best Course?) 2009/8/15
Hi Uji,

Thanks for the advice. Think we will skip Hakone then.

Another question - If I am to stay 1 night, which area should I stay in order to catch a sight of Mt Fuji early in the morning? Kawaguchiko area or Oshino-Hakkai area?

Any recommended places to stay for 2 people?

And what's there at Oshino-Hakkai? Is it worth going, with all the stuff that I already have planned?

Sorry for the barrage of questions.
Thanks!

You can see the mountain close up from both locations. But I have no recommendations for specific hotels.

And what's there at Oshino-Hakkai?

Eight ponds in a very touristy setting. Some people like it. Some people won't be thrilled.

Is it worth going, with all the stuff that I already have planned?

I personally don't think it is worth visiting if you have only limited time. But I thought that your sister liked it...

Hi Uji,

Yup, my sister liked it, but I think I'll decide when I get there. I have to see if I'll have the time to do that.

Thanks for your advice!
