Koyasan temple 2009/8/16
Koyasan
We are looking forward to staying at a Koyasan temple for one evening as a really different experience. Is there one which stands out as superior to the others?

There are so many temples, whichever one you stay in you will enjoy. I am sure that many people will have positive things to say about the one they stayed in, but I wouldnt worry too much - just pick one and enjoy the stay!

shojoshin-in 2009/8/17
I'm sure most temples are great to stay in at Koya-san. I stayed at Shojoshin-in this past spring and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

It was somewhere around 11100 yen (for myself, alone) and had nice accommodation: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mchao/3397487279/in/set-72...

Plus, it's located right near oku no in cemetery, which I wandered at night to great spooky fun. And the two meals I had were great--amazing homemade tofu.

You can book the place on www.japaneseguesthouses.com. The site also has several other temples to browse through, which may fit your criteria better.

Happy hunting.

...there's something decidedly unspiritual about looking for a temple superior to all the others.
Dai-en-in was great (google it)

It appears all the excellent food is prepared in a central kitchen and delivered by van. Eminently sensible - and assuring one is not superior to the others.

It depends on the rest of your itinerary! Specifically, it depends on whether a Kansai Through Pass would be of use to you besides the side trip to Koyasan. If yes, go for the Kansai Through Pass. Otherwise, go for the World Heritage Ticket.
