Clarifying Suica NEx 2009/8/16
I need to condense this in one area: I have asked some of it already but can't find the answers in my bookmarked threads, so I apologise for any repeat questions.

Can this be clarified please:

1. Suica Nex at Narita: are 2 tickets issued: 1 for the Nex ride,(?same as the reserved seat ticket you are given when using a JR Pass from Narita) and a Suica "electronic" card

2. 3500Y cost: 2000Y for NEx, 1500 Suica

3. 500Y deposit: this is my biggest confusion:
1500Y Suica means 1500Y worth of rides, or 1000Y worth?
What actually happens when you use more than 1000Y in rides?
ie: What happens when you have less on the card than the ride you have just taken: does the ticket gate not open when you touch it: what actually tells you to go to the fare adjustment machines, where are they, and are they easy to use in English?
4. Can you recharge this Suica card: if so, how?
Apologies and many thanks again (and yes, I've bookmarked it this time)

1. Suica Nex at Narita: are 2 tickets issued: 1 for the Nex ride,(?same as the reserved seat ticket you are given when using a JR Pass from Narita) and a Suica "electronic" card

Yes, you get a ticket for the NEX ride and a Suica card with a balance of 1500 yen. When passing the gate at Narita Airport, use the NEX ticket, not the Suica card.

3500Y cost: 2000Y for NEx, 1500 Suica

The package costs 3500 yen and includes a Suica card with a balance of 1500 yen and a refundable deposit of the Suica card of 500 yen. So, effectively, the NEX ride costs you 1500 yen.

500Y deposit: this is my biggest confusion:
1500Y Suica means 1500Y worth of rides, or 1000Y worth?

The card will have a balance of 1500 yen to be used. The 500 yen deposit is separate.

What happens when you have less on the card than the ride you have just taken

Then you can use a "fare adjustment machine".

Can you recharge this Suica card: if so, how?

Yes, at a vending machine.

Thanks Uji ! 2009/8/16
Thanks again Uji: so it is 1500Y worth of travel on the Suica part, not 1000Y.
If you go over the 1500 Y then how do you know: ie what exactly happens at the gate: it just doesn't open or beeps or flashes a message????

The gate doors close and a alarm sounds.

After which you go to the fare adjustment machine and pay the difference.

Fare adjustment machines are always located right next to the exits and are clearly marked.

RE: Suica & N'EX 2009/8/16
: so it is 1500Y worth of travel on the Suica part, not 1000Y.

Yes. For the Suica part, you pay 2,000 yen, 500 yen of which is used as a deposit, and you get a Suica Card with 1,500 yen e-money.

Once you enter Suica (& PASMO) network with a Card, you have to use the same card to exit the network.
I recommend holding only one Card and keeping its e-money at least at 150 yen while you are outside the network.
When the e-money of the Card falls short of the minimum fare (i.e. when the amount of the e-money can not afford a ride to any other station in the network), you can not even enter the network with that Card.

: 1. Suica Nex at Narita: are 2 tickets issued: 1 for the Nex ride,(?same as the reserved seat ticket you are given when using a JR Pass from Narita) and a Suica "electronic" card

A N'EX ticket in a Suica & N'EX package has two roles.
This ticket works as a Ltd. Express ticket to take a Narita Express [N'EX] train, and also as a one-day fare ticket valid within a designated area (showed in yellow on this map) around Tokyo.
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/suica-nex/guide.html
Unless you go on the same section twice or more in your route, you can get off a N'EX train at Station A (e.g. Shinagawa), take another train, and exit JR-East by passing through a gate at Station B (e.g. Ueno), all in the same day.

You are not given a ticket with these two roles when you buy a ticket as a JR Pass holder or just buy regular tickets.

CORRECTION: typo 2009/8/16
My dictionary allows "showed" but let me replace it by "shown."

Thanks.

Thanks to all 2009/8/17
Thank you Uji, Express Train and omotenashi: all your replies are very helpful.
This is the first I've heard that the NEx part can be used on the day of arrival as an all day ticket: very handy as we arrive at 6.20am!!
I am most grateful to you all for clarifying these queries: we have been spoilt in the past with JR Passes being so easy.

NOT as one-day pass 2009/8/17
: This is the first I've heard that the NEx part can be used on the day of arrival as an all day ticket: very handy as we arrive at 6.20am!!

This N'EX ticket works NOT as a one-day Pass, but as a one-day fare ticket valid only until you get out through a gate of a station.
This N'EX ticket may help when there is no N'EX train stop near your first destination.
If you plan well for your first day, you can travel with this N'EX ticket to a station which is a bit far from your hotel, then travel with a Suica Card gradually approaching to a station which is close to your hotel.
They don't cover charges, but I think you can complete your one-day trip in urban Tokyo on fare-only trains such as JR-East Local / Rapid trains, Keisei Local / Ltd. Express trains, and subway trains on Tokyo Metro or Toei subway lines.

Have a nice trip!

ah hah 2009/8/17
OK now I understand: we will use NEx to go straight to Shinagawa to leave luggage at the hotel, and then Suica from there will be fine.
Thanks for the clarification.

But let's face it. As testified by the hundreds of confused enquiries ,very few understand how the passes work. They are far too complicated for tourists to understand!
Personally I can't be bothered wasting time trying to work through the complicated maze of passes and just forget about them. Holiday time is just too precious for that.

Well said! 2009/8/17
I agree with the above.

The bottom line is:

You are NOT going to rack up a huge cost on ANY local public transport in Japan, so you really DON'T need to worry about saving a few hundred yen, and spend hours trying to figure out the best cards to use.

Get a PASMO or Suica, enjoy using it, if the money runs out, top up more.

If you are on a budget then spend more time on your accommodation as THAT is where you will spend money, NOT on your local transport.

they are worth it 2009/8/17
Now this has been cleared up for me my view is that the JR Pass combined with the Suica NEx is well worth it; the saving on time and hassle booking individual tickets is immense.
We paid 45100Y for a 14 day pass earlier this year, and used over 70,000Y worth of rides in 2 weeks without spending a great deal of time on the trains. We also ate well and stayed in very comfortable accommodation.
So, I think the passes are well worth researching, and using, and this forum is wonderful for the advice it provides.
Thank you to all the very useful and helpful replies.

Agreed 2009/8/17
Agreed, we were getting the JR Pass and the Limo bus and Japan Metro 2 day pass etc etc and its just too complicated.

Given theres only so many train rides you can take in one day to see the sights, its not a lot of money to be saved, if any, with the metro pass. The Suica pass with our JR for the longer inter-city is going to be ideal, easy peasy as well, just scan and go!

SUICA which is is the main thread is about isn't a pass.

It is a prepaid card and money is deducted each time you use it, there is no discount.

The special NEX narita express ticket is only 1500 yen vs 3500+ for a full priced ticket.

So if you want to pay a full 3500yen for a narita express ticket, all the power to you.

More ??about Suica NEx 2009/8/24
It sounds as though the Suica -NEx package is a good deal, but as I understand the instructions, this package can only be purchased at the Narita airport. What about travel back to the airport at the end of my trip? How much is the NEx fare to get back to Narita from Sjinjuku station? I see that JR East has a 3 & 4 day flex-passes that start around 100USD. Can that pass be used for the NEx? If so, perhaps that the flex pass is a better deal?
by Dunatos rate this post as useful

. 2009/8/24
Yes the NEX is a JR East train, however a full priced ticket for the NEX is 3000 yen or so.

Because there are alternate cheaper trains (as low as 1000yen) like the Keisei Limited Express , I wouldn't get a JR East pass just for Tokyo useage.

Can use for Narita to Yokohama? 2009/8/27
Hi

Can I confirm if this Y3500 card can be used for travel on NEX from Narita to Yokohama?

As well as train service within Yokohama?

Thanks in advance.

Can I confirm if this Y3500 card can be used for travel on NEX from Narita to Yokohama?

It is not a card, but a package consisting of a NEX ticket and a Suica card.

The NEX ticket can be used all the way from Narita Airport to Yokohama (or even as far as Ofuna on Ofuna bound trains).

The Suica card can be used on virtually all transportation in the Greater Tokyo area, which includes Yokohama.

Clarifying Suica NEx 2009/8/27
Sorry to tag into your thread... I will be travelling to tokyo in 3 weeks and have a question regarding the Narita NEX pass as well...I notice the Narita Express costs around 3000 yen to travel from narita airport to ikebukuro, so if i purchase the package for 3500 yen from the airport, i have 1500 yen for SUICA use. What happen to the value of Suica if i cannot use the total value in one day ?
by rebgv1 rate this post as useful

suica 2009/8/27
Suica is not a day pass, rather more like a debit card, so the balance will remain on your card until you use it.
