Ryokan onsens 2009/8/17
Niigata
Was just wondering what the deal was for going to an onsen attatched to a ryokan, whether or not you can use it if you're not a staying guest?

The onsens I'm probably visiting will be either yutagami, senami or tsukioka in the Niigata area. If anyone knows anything about them or about using onsens at ryokans in general, I'd be grateful for the info.

It entirely depends on the ryokan! Some allow it. Some don't. Prices vary widely from around 200 yen to over 2000 yen.

Thanks, I don't suppose you or anyone else knows the deal with the particular onsens I mentioned? I can't find any detailed information about them online.

I roughly estimate that about half of all ryokan open their baths to non-staying guests. This means that there are usually quite a few baths to choose from.

The following page has lists of baths that are open to non-staying travelers:
http://www2b.biglobe.ne.jp/~kondo/onsen/kaetsu.htm

There are 15 listings for Senami Onsen (g) and 20 listings for Tsukioka Onsen ()

For Yutagami, the page lists just one place, and it seems that a daytime visit by non-staying guests is coupled with a lunch:

The letters in the fourth column, by the way, are ratings. A means "recommended". B means "quite good", C means "so so" and D means "not so good".

Note also that these listings include some foot baths, where you solely bathe your feet.
